Welcome to the forum, quite a few members have been buying up these late 211.

You should get some advice in the morning

Hi Merc7 and welcome to the Forum.

There are several good times to buy and if you are lucky, you can get some of these to coincide:
  1. "run out" models at the end of a model type, or at the end of a model year if the model continues but has been "face lifted"
  2. just before the new registration plates appear
  3. toward the end of the salesman's cycle for targets - if they need to make sales to complete a quota or hit a target by the end of the week or month
  4. when a specific car has been on the forecourt for 5 weeks, and it is their practice to send it to auction after 6 weeks (they won't get much at auction today, so might be very keen to sell)
  5. when they have too much stock
  6. when they have just acquired a number of "pre-registered" (unused) cars and need to move them on (often cheaper than cars in stock with mileage on them)
  7. when a car has been with them a long time and they are reducing the price progressively until it sells
  8. demonstrators for which it is time to move on.
You need to get a good understanding of the way the dealer operates in order to get a feel for some of these but, as the average man on the street is not going to this level of thinking, you may find a salesman who will discuss these matters with you quite openly (I once bought a cracking car through a salesman who had resigned to go to another brand and was just working out his notice!).

I have also tried the following line in conversation - "I have just handed back my company car. If you (Mr Salesman) were going to buy a car here, which is the best buy, and why"?

Good hunting. You will get a good feel for price from the search engines (valuations from What Car, Wise Buyers' Guide, etc, searches on Autotrader) and some of these might even suggest to you the price you should aim for, given the type, model and spec you are keen to buy.

We look forward to hearing (and seeing) the good news.

Hi and welcome, I have just had the pleasure of purchasing just such a car, I purchased on 08 plate E220 AG 9 months old albeit with 12K miles. It has black leather, auto, heated seats, cd changer and pre wire. The guy did it for £17800, he price matched a 57 plate I had been looking at in a main dealership. There are good deals out there so be patient and wait for the right car. I can forward you the garages name if you would like, he specialises in Mercedes.
Added a picture!
Good luck
Paul.

At least you won't need to persuade her of the merits of your plan!

Much depends on how selective you are about the spec. Most dealers are asking around £20k to £23k for low mileage 2008 Avantgarde 220cdi saloons, automatic etc. But haggle.

Best time to buy is not necessarily the same for new and for the nearly new that you want. Now is a good time for nearly new as they are actually going up in value in Glass's Guide. New sales are terrible and so nearly new are getting a boost. In addition the PCP deals for a brand new 211 series E class are so good that nearly new prices are affected. Once the new model comes on stream the PCP deals will disappear. (At the moment you get free upgrade to Avantgarde, Elegance or Sport, plus leather, automatic and metallic at no extra charge, plus a discount, plus a low APR of under 6% for the finance and an excellent guaranteed residual after three years. These deals help to sell new cars but harm prices of nearly new.

As a result I was able to pick up a 220cdi Avantgarde E class Estate with leather, parktronic, memory seats, phone pre wiring, tinted glass etc etc, for £16k below list price when it was only 6 months old and with only 6k miles on the clock.

Go to the MB website. Most nearly new are with dealers. Check nationwide, set date to 2008 or later and min spec and they come up from about 19k. Asking price often has some slack for haggling. If no part ex you should get a good deal.

I agree with this strategy. The website enables you to set parameters for a search then to be advised if a vehicle comes up which matches your criteria. And you can set the boundaries as harshly as you like.

That is what I did a couple of years ago, and within a few days a car, discounted for sale prior to going to auction, popped up.

The rest is history. Excellent deal, super car.

i always look for a low mileage two year old from a non-mercedes dealership with a years manufacturers warranty left or a three year old low mileage from mercedes dealership with the years warranty thrown in.
both will have done their biggest drops in value while still giving you an E-Class that looks and feels brand new.
