When that advertisement was first shown, a blond walked up to the Ford Estate, wiggled her pretty toes under the rear bumper while carrying about three hundredweight of shopping, and the tailgate magically opened.

What wasn't shown were the many out-takes, where the blond wiggled her pretty toes and promptly fell over!

At least, as long as I remember to have the MB keys in my hand before gallantly humping all the shopping I can just squeeze the keyfob as I approach the car and smile as the tailgate rises. I wiggle nothing when making this happen!

Notice the guy said to be careful if you do the MB Hop on a slippery surface.

... Such as Tesco's car park in the rain.

Wonder who will be the first car maker to get sued?

I posted about this problem over a year ago with my e class.
It was found open in work car prrk by a colleague.
I was 100 yards away inside the building. I was working with the key fob still in my pocket.
I have been careful with the fob ever since but still a poor design that cannot be overridden
regards,
M

I think you'll find that theres more to it than accidentally holding down a small remote button. As i said, this happens overnight when the keys are hung up. I also said that I was sitting in Tesco's car park with the keys in the ignition, although not running. Then all of a sudden the tailgate pops open!!!

So here we have 2 cars of the same year and type, there could be a manufacturing fault here and worth contacting Mercedes.

Similar issue with new 2015 C200 Saloon

Hi,

I have registered with the club because I have had a couple of instances where I have closed the boot lid on my new C200 Sport Premium (Sept 2015 model) by pressing the close and lock button on the lid itself and just walked away. When I have returned the boot lid was open !

I actually parked next to a 2016 model of the same car a couple of weeks ago in Tesco car park and their boot lid was open so I has an assistant put out a call over the public address to notify the owner.

I have a theory as to what is causing this. My car has keyless entry, I had wave my foot under the boot to open it and I can press buttons on the fob, all the usual stuff. Now, if I opt to press the right hand button on the opened lid to close it (which is close and lock the car) and then directly walk away from the car as it is closing then the keyless system loses contact with the key in my pocket (keyless entry only works within a metre or so of the car) and stops the boot lid from closing.

Since realising that I now stand beside the car as the lid is closing and watch it fully close. Since doing that I have not had any further problems.

Hope this helps. It would really help if Mercedes dealers went through the keyless system more fully with owners who are new to this feature.

I have a 2015 C Class Sport Premium and have had 3 occasions when I have closed the boot lid only to return later and find it open, most worrying ! In fact I parked next to an identical car a couple of weeks ago in Tesco car park which had its boot lid open and no owner around (I got an assistant to put out a call on the public address).
Anyway, I think I know what is causing it. My car has Keyless Entry and I have a variety of ways to open the boot and I can close it with the fob or by pressing the buttons on the boot lid itself. The right hand button both closes and lid and locks the car. If I press this and then walk briskly away from the car as its closing the car loses contact with the key in my pocket and stops closing and re-opens.
Since realising that I always stand beside the car (within the recommended 1 metre range) and wait while the lid fully closes before walking away. Since doing this I have had no futher problems.

On my old BMW E36 Touring, I'd often accidentally pop the rear window (which opened independently of the whole boot). Luckily, that only popped and didn't rise open. Did it numerous times due to keys being in pocket.

Was most annoying when you sit in the car about to pull away and the light on the dashboard says the boot's open!

I have googled the problem and there are plenty of others that have experienced it!

I have had the same problem on every car I have owned with this feature.
Also found the electric windows all wound fully down on several Fords due
to pressing and holding the unlock button whilst in my pocket.

Must stop wearing tight trousers!! ;)

I have had exactly the same problem on my new E Class. This has happens on three separate occasions and I was wandering whether it was me, or a design fault. I now genuinely believe it's the latter.
On one occasion I had parked in the street for an overnight stay with a friend. At about 9:00 we received a knock at the door from a neighbor who asked whether the car was ours as the boot was full open. At the time the boot was full with cameras, coats etc.
On another occasion we noticed the boot was fully open whilst on our drive when it was raining and all the contents were soaked.
I have had Audi's and Jaguars with remote boot releases before with no problem. This is my first Mercedes., and this issue worries me immensely.

Alan, exactly the same thing happened to me on Monday this week. I was at our main office (I normally work from home) and staying over. After work my boss suggested we go to the local pub for a bite to eat, and suggested I drove.

When we came out of the pub 90 mins later, the boot was wide open in the car park. It had my case with clothes in, my briefcase, and two laptops...
My heart sank as I assumed someone had jemmied open the boot and all the stuff had gone, however as I approached the car, luckily all the items were still there. It was a bit of a dodgy area, and I can only assume that if anyone saw it open they thought it was a police sting!!

My car is a 2016 213 E class 220d...

I certainly do not think I pressed the remote in any way.

I don't get it, when the boot opens they don't fling open with that much force, I and my friends and families have had this option in many cars over the years including Merc, Bentley, Audi etc... from since around 2005 on wards and not once has this nearly happened. I have never once accidentally opened the boot by pressing the wrong button as you only have to literally push the lock/unlock button for an extremely short time, and the boot button has to be held down for a much much longer time. I'm sorry this happened to you but if someone had pressed the boot button by accident or on purpose, then I believe that the issue is copletely your fault. If the boot flung open to hit something that was in the way, I can see how it could possibly scratch or dent a part of the boot lid, but for it to be twisted out of shape, that again would be from whoever opening the garage door forcing it quite hard and not by the boot opening under it's own spring mechanism.

I do have sympathy for you, but to blame this on Merc or to say that system is dangerous I would have to strongly disagree with... Just accept responsibility and learn from the mistake...

If it is the fault of the car or the key opening for no reason, then by all means, it would be Mercs fault. I do hope if this is the case, you can somehow prove it, but even then, you would likely just get paid the excess and maybe a fix to stop the fault from happening in the future.... Still interesting seeing as some comments from other people seem to be mentioning similar things happening.

Lambo, the original post was 10 years ago, so I hope he has got over the damaged boot by now:D

I think it is more of an issue now with boot lids apparently opening themselves, either due to a fault, or an inadvertent 'trouser press'....

It could be a W213 E class issue, but I am sure that I would have more chance waking up next to Kate Moss than getting Mercedes to admit to it.

All I would caution to fellow owners of the 213 E Class, is be careful if you leave valuables in your boot in an open area.....

The laughable fact is that I cannot even leave them on the back seat, as I paid the EXTRA £400 for fold down rear seats that are operated from inside the boot:(

Thanks Yellowduck. It looks like we have the same model with the same problem. Looking at the posts over the past few years it seems to occur with the new (ish) design of key fob. I don't think it's a problem in the car itself, but I am convinced that there is a design fault with the fobs.
Mercedes said there was "no fault found" when they had a look at the boot mechanism. I think we have a genuine, and worrying, problem.

My 56 plate CLK220 has been found with boot open in my drive three times in the last two years. My key is always in my pocket and my wife has the other key in her handbag but she sometimes takes it out of the bag before bed so not sure if it's my key or hers being actuated, but it does take two seconds constant pressure to open.
I always reverse in and there are high hedges so it's hard to see it's open, lucky only one time it had been raining and got a wet carpet

If you subscribe to Mercedes me connect on your smartphone you will get a message saying your boot is open and you can close it using your phone.
I was having a dash cam fitted yesterday and i kept getting messages saying my doors and boot was open.
