Having recently got my new B Class (W246) my missus has now insisted we need a bike carrier. Can anyone recommend a decent product please.

Saris Bones are the best out there, unless you have a tow hitch.

Be careful to check compatibility though - essentially do you have a solid metal rear door, or does it have a plastic trim on the bottom, like the stupid W210 door.

The only company who have actually though this through properly, and built a decent rack. Merc don't do a rear that's not tow mounted, and bikes on the roof is a no-no unless they are disposable and you like paying for fuel - about 20% extra.

Evans cycles do them, as does eBay.

I have a large bike rack I no longer use .. Had it it when we had the X3 ... You can have it for £25 if its any good... Will see if I can find a link to it for you to see... But in essence it sits on top of the rear bumper and fits securely onto the roof bars - if you have them ... Cost me about £150 new and was used for 3 holidays ..carried up to 4 bikes on it...

I carry mountain bikes round regularly and use a tow bar hitch. I got a detachable towbar fitted and use a Thule 3 bike rack (RideOn?) on it. Nice and secure and you get can them in Halfords, plus the mud drops off as you drive along.

I am not convinced by racks which go on the boot lid and don't trust myself to lift heavy bikes onto the roof, even if they are secure once up there. Note you can only get 3 bikes on a towbar/rear mount so if you have to carry 4, you are stuck with a roof rack. Though you will need a ladder to get them all up there!

The B220 will not take the Saris Bones 3. It will damage the spoiler at the top of the tailgate.

Funny world ... they legislate against the Rolls winged lady until its bendy, but let folks just strap bikes on the back of cars with crappy little claws and straps.

Sorry but they should be banned!

My neighbour saw one unload 2 bikes at 90 mph on the french main autoroute south.
Wrecked 6 cars and they all waited for an hur as the air ambulance airlifted some "unfortunate sod" to hospital.

Re post #5 above. I have a similar set-up but with a Thule 2 bike carrier. What sold this system to me was the fact that the carrier is designed to tilt the bikes backwards in the event that you wish to open the boot without damaging the paintwork. An excellent system.
