Wrong Fuel, Blonde/Senior moment!!

Hi all,
just stood in the garage filling my C220 CDI and noticed a strong smell of petrol, looked down and to my horror had a petrol pump in my hand as opposed to a diesel pump.:( Stopped filling and spoke to the garage (tesco) who had a leaflet on what to do, Pre 1998 can mix but not more than 20% after 98 cannot mix at all. I had put in 8.75 litres of petrol in on top of approx 6 litres of diesel already in there.
Stealership said do not start (obviously) and drain down, do not add more diesel.
I phoned the independent I use to see if I could get it recovered to them for a drain down and they all but gaurenteed that because I had "only" put in 8.75 litres, less than 20% of total tank contents, I could brim it with diesel and it would be OK. I should refill when it gets down to half apparently.
I have taken their advice and filled it with diesel and it seems ok, if I post no further threads in the next few days it is because I am broken down on the A272:(
Interesting to hear peoples thoughts on this.
Paul.

We've had a number of post on this subject before. From personal experience, the scare stories are simply that. I know many people who have run cdis on 100% petrol. driven until it conked out (when the penny finally dropped), drained and refilled with diesel with no apparent ill effects. And these are new cars.

So, if it starts, it should be fine. The garage advice about refilling at 1/2 tank is good but I might go further and refill at 3/4 first and then again when it gets to 1/2, just to be safe.

Hi, thanks for your comments, this reassures me somewhat. The car seems to be fine although I have only driven a couple of miles. Having had the news posted around my office as a source of amusement, it's surprising how many people have made the same mistake.

So far we have only had 6 liters on a full tank that considered near the max. hope that you will be OK. The only lubrication for the high pressure pump is the diesel.

You hold the new record of 8

Hi Malcolm, I hope so too, I would rather have a sound fuel system than the record for the highest petrol/diesel mix.

Top it up with diesel at every single station you pass, it'll be fine. Its not going to break down if you do that.

Stick some cheap mineral engine oil in the tank. This will make up for the reduced lubricity caused by the petrol.

About 15 years ago I thought of a good invention, which was, if someone designed a device that fits just inside the fuel pipe when you take off the cap, which, would not allow a diesel nozzel to be put in petrol cars or a petrol nozzel to be put in diesel cars, as the fuel delivery gun nozzels are different sizes.

Did anyone ever invent my 'thought'!?

What about a triangular nozzle for petrol and a square for diesel?? Just seen my 2 year old with a shape sorter gave me that idea!!

Ok how about a 50/50 deal on the promotion of this idea and have the delicious Hanz do the publicity!?

The idea is OK but there could be a lot of strain on the neck of the filler as you could not rotate the filling pistol

Come on Malcolm, you have the ability to take this further.

Pinewood

The biggest fly in the ointment is to make it compatible with old and new cars.

Since electronics are cheap,so when you pick up the nozzle from the pump, a voice could say " You are filling with diesel" or "you have selected petrol"

Some pumps already 'speak' Malcolm as you suggest....and if your mind is as complex as mine at times, no matter what is happening/spoken as you fill your car you do not hear it!

It is my understanding that the majority of fuel pipes are of the same diameter, what about a flexible/spring loaded device that springs/fits into place?

What about different colour hoses? :D

No good Hibbo colour blind people see green as black, as what caused this problem.

We had an tv engineer who had this problem, with a 1MΩ resistor BR/BL/GR

he always fitted a 10Ω BR/BL/BL
