I have a 1999 E280, with aircon. The fan blower seems to have a mind of its own. It works when I first start the car in th morning for a few seconds, then cuts out. When travelling it will suddenly start working properly, no matter what speed setting it is on. If I turn off the engine and restart, it will again not work. I have changed the switch unit, but on checking the power output to the fan the voltage seems to be there, then suddenly stops. This suggested that the switch was fauly, but changing this has not fixed the problem. Can anyone help?

Blower fan working intermittently

Hi Matt / Ron,

I've just recently had this problem fixed. In my case the a/c control module (big black box that houses the 3 centre swtiches and two dials) was up the duff thus causing the a/c to have a mind of it's own. Symptoms were full fan (including   both auxillary fans on full blast) and full heat, with all dashboard controls having no effect, when the car was first started for the day and then after 15 to 30 mins the a/c would then function normally. The problem was getting worse with time though.

Hope this helps.

S.

Had similar probs on old Renault years ago.
Replaced bushes on blower. Easy cheap job.
Worth starting here.

Blower fan working intermittently

Hi Ron
I experienced a similar problem on my 88/200 brought about by a over enthuisiastic mechanic investigating a non-start problem ( which he cured) but left me with a heater/air fan moter that switched on even with ignition switched off( causing a few flat batteries before I sussed the cause. The cause?? when probing into the wiring loom adjacent to ignition switch with his multi-meter he had created a short circut tween two adjacent cables, which connected as & when ,  Cure ? I dont leave fan switched ON any more when I park up.

good luck Regards Barnie
