Your knowledge in this area seems to be quite good so I'll take that on board. Just goes against what I have understood in the past. I was not aware that there were preset maximums at various rev levels and assumed that MAF would continue to adjust as it does through the range up to the max level. I knew the MAF had quite a high level of control as it makes major alterations when EGR cuts in etc. Interesting. Thanks for the discussion.

No worries. I guess a key point is that there is no clear theoretical limit to how much torque any diesel engine can produce at any rpm. This is different to petrol engines which are limited by the chemistry of air fuel ratio and compression of the charge.

If you can somehow keep tipping in more air and more fuel into a diesel, it will keep producing more and more torque, until something lets go.

The maximum torque limits are therefore pre-set in the base fuelling set by the factory. This limit is usually determined by the drivetrain at any specific rpm. Heaps of torque at low revs is the thing diesels are best at, but its also the thing that breaks transmissions.
