I got a told by a work colleague that my car boot was open in the car park today - golf clubs etc on display - anyone could have walked away with them.
I had the key in my pocket and must have acidentally pressed the open boot button.
I hadnt realised that this could happen. I thought the vehicle had to be unlocked before this button opened the boot.

Is it possible in any way to prevent this happening again? For example is it possible to reprogram the remote so the boot remote button can only be active after first pressing the unlock button,
any suggestions appreciated,
regards,
Michael.

On my w202 c class if you press and hold down the bottom right button it opens the boot only, leaves the doors locked. It sounds like yours could be similar. Just to point out though you have to hold the button down maybe 2 or 3 seconds before it activates the boot.

Yes it looks like I pressurised the said button whilst the key was in my pocket in work.It could just as easliy been the main unlock button. Only the boot was open when I went to investigate. The signal went thro` a brick wall to the vehicle which was 100 yards away,

The key must have been under pressure for some time as a much longer press is required to open the boot, I think that you can turn the key in the boot lock so that it will not open.

If you accidently press the main unlock button it will unlock the door or doors but if you don't open any door within a set time, probably 15 to 20 seconds it locks the doors again. Great security feature. It can't do the same with the boot once its popped open.

Just what I was thinking. The doors would relock after a short time but an opened boot will stay open. I will experiment and try locking it with the key element and see it this disables the remote opening.

Take the keys from your pocket keep them somewhere else - I used to have a 2006 VW Passat - several times before I learnt my lesson I saw the boot open and all four windows down in the car park at work ;-)

I said that would happen just yesterday on post #16 on the other thread.

Thanks -I had not seen the similar thread in the Electrics sub forum.
Mods you may delete or merge the 2 threads to avoid the unnecessary duplication ,

I don't leave any valuables in the boot because of this. It has happened to me lots of times.

The boot lid operated in a similar way on my late Jaguar XJ, but alarmingly it opened instantly upon pressing the button. My worst nightmare was accidentally opening it when the back end was under a concrete overhang in a multi-storey car park. At least the Mercedes-Benz one - and maybe Jaguar these days - requires prolonged pressure and so is less likely to be operated accidentally.

I have too rules with car fobs; one is to keep them in a pocket with nothing else in it, to minimise the risk of accidental pressure; the other is to never close the boot lid without having the fob in my hand so it doesn't get locked in - I actually stare at it whilst pulling the boot lid down.

I also keep the fob separate from other keys, unlike my wife who seems to have all the keys of the Bank of England on her keyring.

The boot on mine requires a fairly rapid double click of the "open boot" button in order to work. I think this adds a degree of protection from accidental opening, but not fool proof of course.
