I have a half share in a mint 1993 190 2.6, myself and a friend bought it together for £350.
It came to us as a none runner, the car is mint, its done 150k miles but looks like its done 50k, it has the 16 inch lorenser alloys which really sets the car off.

Anyway, so we have put a fresh battery on her, fuel, dizzy cap and rotor arm. Compression test on all 6 cylinders bang on, good spark on all cylinders, replaced the OVP and fuel pump relay.
We managed to get her to fire up soon after replacing the battery and dizzy cap etc, the car would only run with the throttle pressed and revving but dies when the throttle is released, no tickover possible.
Started to look at inlet manifold breathers and jetronic and decided to remove the jetronic from the manifold, first thing that was apparent was the rubber below the inlet wasnt seating properly on the inlet manifold and letting air in, so I thought that was the problem, the rubber was also perished so we bought a new one.
Put it all back together and now she fires up better and revs smoother but with constant revs the engine becomes lumpy and starts to smoke and I mean a lot of smoke. Then she dies.

I have tried to adjust the mixture using a 3mm allan key on an anti clock wise turn 45 degree turn at a time but it seems to make no difference. Im thinking the fuel distributor maybe at fault but not sure anyone here have any ideas please.

will post pics soon.

Hi JIB If the car chokes its self then this points to the cold start valve being stuck on all of the time,

The mixture control sensors are
Coolant
Air intake temp

When the engine starts to choke you could unplug the cold start valve and see if the engine runs OK

if aything like the k jetronic fitted to my golf gti in the 80s, you only rocked the adjuster, ie 1 or 2 degrees at a time to make quite large changes in co values.

I agree 100% with you,,the snag is now that once the fault is found it can be very difficult to find the correct point for the air flow plate and as you say 1-2 degrees is enough to stop the car, once running its best don on an exhaust gas analyzer

Wow!!! some good points guys, I have tried the cold start valve but that was before the the inlet rubber was replaced so I will try that again, the choking would point to serious over fueling, I have also read on the net that unplugging the connection for the electronic throttle plate turns the system to fully mechanical injection.

Ellsy

Car ws running without the air filter attached, filter is also new, smoke colour is a greyish, white/blue all combined, she runs smooth for about 5 secs and then starts to miss and then the smoke builds up.

We noticed whilst the jetronic was removed the inlet manifold is wet with old fuel and sludge and Im wondering if thats being pulled through and causing some of the smoke.
