I have a 1996 W124 E200 estate with a four speed auto box. Does anybody out there know if it is possible to swop current box for a five speed one and where would the best place be to get a replacement.

I would say not, being as the five speed boxes 722.6 are electronically controled and the 722.5 4 speed boxes are mechanical.
There would be far to much missing on the 124 electronics, no can structure for a start.

Somebody eles may say different thought but i wouldnt even think about it.

Sorry mate!!!!

Only the twin-cam six-cylinder petrol engines on the W124 had the option of a 5-speed auto. The boxes are essentially identical except the 5-speed has an electrically-operated overdrive 5th. I think your best bet would be to change the car for a 280/320 or maybe put a higher (numerically lower) diff in yours if you want it higher-geared

I couldn't ever see an auto box replacement being economically viable
