Tried BP Ultimate Diesel for the first time over the Easter weekend. Normally on a run (mostly motorway, bit of London driving) I'd get 235 miles on half a tank (cheapest Sainbury's derv). This time it was 260 miles on half a tank, about an 11% increase, plus I was driving the car faster on the way back (M40 from Warwickshire) thanks to light traffic over Easter. So the extra expense seems more than worth it. Car felt a bit quicker too.

Any more positive experiences with this fuel?

There is a whole thread on this subject.
I would recommend using the tried and tested method of manually calculating MPG as the trip computer is optomistic. Try it over quite a few tankfuls of your normal motoring for a meaningful comparrison

The !90D doesn't have an on-board computer! I also filled up again when I got home to get an accurate figure (46 mpg). Will monitor to see if it's a one-off or not...

Adrian,

I've experienced the same sort of increase in mileage as you, also along the M40. I thought it was BP Ultimate but it might be the M40!!!!

does the added cost/miles gained work out better or same than normal diesel? I'm still a bit skeptical to try it.

All sorts of factors effect MPG, temperature, wind direction etc. so the greater number of tankfulls and varied driving conditions will be a fairer comparison. Anyway its all downhill from Warwickshire to London!!

I've not had any MPG change with ultimate. I tend to use it for the detergents and generally better quality though now its over £1 per litre I am balking a bit. I popped some ordinary shell stuff in yesterday - around 2/3 of a tank on top of the 1/3 remaining ultimate - can't say I can feel any difference and the MPG on my daily commute is pretty much identical.

Unless it is me (probably, as I've never truly recovered from three quids worth of unleaded in the first ML) but am sure that the supermarket 'plonk' diesel makes my ML sound a bit 'knocky'.

Engine does seem a lot smoother with the pricey stuff. I'm sticking to standard BP diesel with a tankful of Ultimate every 4-5 fill ups.

Noticed some S African jollop on sale in the stealership on Sat - supposed to do wonders for diesel engines. Can't for the life of me think what it was called.....was really surprised to see aftermarket stuff neing touted at MB dealership.

BP Ultimate

Hell there,

I have tried BP ultimate many times in 3 different diesels.

VW T5 174 Kombi
Audi A2 1.4TDi Sport
Mercedes Sprinter Motorhome 416CDi

On a recent (Easter) trip through France in the Sprinter I tried it on 2 tankfulls of Ultimate. The cost of Normal Shell diesel was roughly 72p liter v BP's ultimate @ 84p.

I found little difference between the 2.

No power gain, No smoke reduction though, possibly some mileage gain. Maybe if you were to run it for say 10 tankfulls there may be a more marked benefit. Though as the price of Ultimate Derv in the UK is running closer to 110p per litre, I think I will leave that task to someone else!

We are off to Spain soon where Shell Diesel sells for around 65p a litre. If BP's ultimate is readily available (was'nt at Christmas) I might try it.

Otherwise.............anyone else done more than a couple of tanks?
