Hi All,

After a service my local merc dealer says I need to replace my front brake calliper as the bleed nipple "end" is missing. Which has to come from Germany, and will cost £500+ (with fitting and VAT).

Seems a bit of a waste to throw it away.

Is it complex to remove what is left (might be a bit stuck) and just get a new nipple?

Seems like a repair/replace will be allot cheaper than a replace.

I am suprised they did not suggest trying to fix it first.

What has happened here is that it has sheared off when some has tried to undo it. What is the car please.

If the brakes do not need bleeding, you can just leave it

Er.. no not really, although the stealer will mention it each time.

They tried to blead the brakes as apparently it needed fluid.

Also I need to do the disks/pads, so some fluid will probably need to be removed.

Thanks again!

As the pads wear so the fluid tank will drop in level. if there was a leak it would show as a damp patch,,but as SAM said they are very low torque and easy to drill out if you wish to change it. the caliper must come of to do it

Thanks Malcolm.

BTW Not concerned by any leaks - I think I would notice that, and in the last X,000 miles I think the car would complain!

This most commonly occurs with cars that have the aluminium "sport" calipers. It winds me up a little that young mechanics are not taught properly today! A tiny dab of heat on a tight nipple will have it unscrewing easily. A competant old school mechanic will remove that broken stub for you, with the aid of an M6 repair washer and a MIG welder, for the price of a cheap bottle of plonk... Easier and quicker than drilling too.

Quite possibly - difficult, if not impossible to prove.

However as the brakes have only ever been looked after by MB dealers (I assume, I am the third owner) I might fire off a letter to MB to see what they say about either their nipples failing in odd ways, or over enthusiastic tightening.
