Having a devil of a problem with a 'simple' job. In the process of changing my wafer-thin front discs but they are solidly stuck to the spigot of the hub due to 13 years (I suspect) of corrosion. Removed the hubs completely and even tried wood blocks and a fence post hammer to shock it off but to no avail. (and yes, I removed the securing screw and two roll pins first!) I'm thinking I'll have to enlist the help of a hydraulic press, unless someone has an alternative solution. Have already tried the weight of a car to free it. Anybody with any suggestions?

Hi Tom,

Most small engineering firms will have a fly-press somewhere in the factory. Should be able to separate disc and hub quickly with one of those.

The other thing that occurs to me is HEAT. Heat the disc with a blowlamp to expand it then place on wooden blocks and knock the hub out using a brass drift.

I work in a small engineering firm and would try the fly press route first.

Funny how these simple jobs can sometimes take ages !!!

Lightly smear mating surfaces with Copaslip when reassembling. Might help when taking them apart again in 2019. ;-)

Best of luck,

Ron

Yes Ron, I'm thinking the press method too at the moment. Spent the whole afternoon so far just trying to get one disc off but I know now just to remove the other hub complete then off to the engineers. I have a sneaky suspicion the previous owner has probably tried to replace them at some stage and just given up (he had the car ten years) and just kept shoving pads in, they're worn so thin!
Makes one appreciate having a second car available in the household too!

Success at last! An anvil and a blacksmith built like a brick sh--house found the job to be 'no problem'! I took a brainstorm and replaced the bearings while the hubs were off.
Maybe just my age and lack of patience nowadays. Anyway all singin' an' dancin' and no run-out problems.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
Cheers, Tom.

Glad you got there at last Tom, brute strength and the biggest hammer you can find usually frightens anything into submission.

Well done Tom. Good idea to do the bearings while you were in there.
