Hi all,

Was driving my C250TD estate to the airport today and the BAS/ASR/Airbag lights cam on and stayed on. The cruise control also failed to work. Dropped my mum off at airport, restarted car and drove back home, this time the BAS/ASR/Airbag lights went off after a minute or so. About 30 miles up the road I had to stop to refuel. Started the car, lights came back on and as I re-joined the dual carriage way the gearbox suddenly seemed to drop out of gear. Its a 5 speed auto, so as I was pressing the accelerator the car just revved and didn't engage drive:x. I changed down to 4 and 3 and nothing happened for about 2-3 mins when suddenly the car made a quiet thud and the auto box seemed to re-engage and allowed me to drive on:-?. All the way the home the gearbox worked well and the BAS lights stayed on. I've scanned through the posts so assume this may be brake light switch related but why would it affect the gearbox? Or is this something else more expensive and sinister? Television, have you got any sage advice on this? All answers gratefully received.

Growla..

Hi Malcolm,

Thanks for the quick reply. I think it could also be the OVF/R relay (part 128) given the gearbox seemed to go into some funny mode for a few minutes. What do yo u think?

Happy christmas btw.

Dont think so some how as this does not affect the box, loosing the speed signal would affect the box

Ok changed the brake light switch and it's made no difference to the problem. Both lights are still on do what else could it be? Have seen other threads and am not sure it's an ovr problem as my car is a 98 model and probably doesn't have one. Television talked about speed sensors given the issue I had yesterday with the gearbox. Anyone got any ideas???

Old dover sole..

Would like to help you steer the posting back on track guys, is the OVP (number 128 in the weblink) on a 1998 model and where is it located? Is it in the sealed box in front of the passenger seat, that houses the ECU or is it somewhere else in the engine bay? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated......and Malcolm I don't think you're that old or forgetful old fruit!

OK back on track,, it in the fuse box under the bonnet, the one with the 2 lids, and the OVP relay has a fuse in the top, and is the only one anything like it

Guys,

Have looked the rear part of the fuse panel on the drivers side and there's no 128 in there with a fuse on top. There are 2 yellow solenoid type fuses, a green and a black but nothing looking like 128. Having had a look at that russian website my chassis number ends WDB202***2F761187 so I don't actually think this things exists in my version. Am I right or have I looked in the wrong part of the car for this fabled 128??

If my model doesn't have this part then what would cause the continual ASR light issue, speed sensors??

Looking at the ruskie site the OVP relay is in a separate box
there is a number by it on the right, and this refers to options on the different cars.

OK so you do not have one, that leaves a speed sensor not working, and this would give you all of the faults that you have.

The fronts give more problems than the rear, could be dirty or faulty

checking for faulty speed sensors? Diagnostic machine required?

Local indie shut till 5th, typical. Considering its likely to be speed sensors will I need to get the car on a diagnostic machine to check out which unit it is or can I assume its on the front? Are they expensive.
