Hi All,

My Brake Pad Warning Signal started coming on last Saturday. This is the first time it has come on. It's "Brake Lining Wear, Visit Workshop" signal.

The brakes are not sqeeking yet. I don't generally do much mileage, a week or two can easily go by without any driving. I normally do about 2,000 miles in a year. However, I about to drive to Manchester and back tomorrow. Do you think I would be OK!

I have asked a few people who have said that you can or they have driven more than 6 months after the sqeeking started.

Thank you.

If you look through the spokes on the front wheels you can see the brake caliper and possibly the brake pad, the surface touching the disc is the lining that wears, if the sensor has just come on then theres roughly about 4-5mm of pad left.
They will need doing sooner rather than later, if the lining wears completely you could ruin the discs and that will be expensive.

I would say yes if the warning has only just come on, would think you have a 1000 miles before metal to metal contact!

Thank you. Yes, the signal came on Saturday gone, and I haven't really driven the car since. As long as I am OK to do this trip then I can do it immediately when I get back.

Remove the wheel and examine the thickness of pad friction material if there is more than 3mm its OK, if its less than 2mm change them.

New pads have about 10mm of lining so thats about 8mm available for wear, thus (lets guess at 40,000 mile pad lifetime) you get 5000 miles per mm out of a set of pads.

Check the pads to be sure but I dont think you should worry.

I would not reccomend disconnecting or removing the pad wear contacts to put out the warning lamp, I would probably forget about it untill the shrill scream of steel against cast iron reminded me.

As the others, 1000 miles should be OK. Why not do the trip knowing that the pads are worn, and avoid breaking more than necessary, it can be good fun just sitting back and weighing up the road situation ahead

:D I did most of the trip without trying to brake much.

I hardly get to drive nowadays. I forgot what an awesome ride this car has on the open road.

It's a shame I live in London.

Will try and get the pads fixed this weekend. What's average nowadays? I haven't been to a garage in a long time.

Max 1 hour to do plus pads around £30

All good motor factors, these are the firms that supply the local garage trade stock TMD products, these are OE to MB

Look in yellow pages

Thank you. I was looking for an online store that could help me buy it.

I found the pads but I am finding it difficult to find brake pad sensors.

Once again the motor factors or MB sell them, no more than £5
