Hi all

I've got a problem on my C Class Estate (2014) where when I press the brake it shudders and this comes on intermittently. I had new brake pads and discs and then I've has this problem not long after. It's been on diagnostic and nothing showing up other than the battery wasn't great. Its almost like the ABS kicks in........ anyone any ideas? The garage reset the electrics and said see how I go but it's started again intermittently

Hello and welcome,

The pistons can get a build up of rust, when new discs and pads are fitted the rusty bit is then pushed back inside the seals and can jam. As it's happened just after a brake service I'd be getting the brakes and calipers looked at.

Alternatively if the hubs weren't cleaned then the disc might not be sitting flush leading to uneven braking and shudder

I always buy MB parts you get less problems with them and to be honest for most parts there is little difference in price.
Who manufactured the discs and pads the cheaper end of the market can suffer warping of the discs. As BC above the disc run-out should be checked and whether the hub face was clean when fitted?

Discs and pads were MB, I thought it might need new ABS sensors but that isn't showing on diagnostic! Very frustrating!

It’s not unknown for discs from any manufacturer even those supplied by MB to warp suggest you measure the run-out of the discs to see if they are within tolerance, if they are outside tolerance it’s either the discs or a dirty/corroded hub face. Who did the work on the brakes?

It was a local garage (a friend), not a merc specialist

All I can say is that all the above needs checking it’s a bit of a faff but needs to be done not the best time with Xmas on us. If the run-out on the discs is outside tolerance they will need to be taken back

Worth a read of the below thread - W205's have 2 Piece discs with the centers pressed on and it is very easy to damage them
