Hi looking for advice and members experience. I am randomly getting the brake service light (return to workshop) coming on. It puts the fear of god in me as my car has the SBC braking system. I had it checked out at the last service and nothing came up on diagnostics and brakes given the okay.

I have noticed that when it's dry nothing comes up. Lots of rain means it will come on. Any ideas what to look at, it sounds electrical but not sure where the sesors live and how easy to replace.

I'd really appreciate any experiences of similar or places to look.

I suspect you have actually got a SAM failure; I had these exact symptons on my R230 SL500 - worse when wet, although it deteriorated over time.

Thanks for the quick reply. If this is the route of the problem are there further symptoms I should look out for?

I am almost scared to ask the next question. How much does a SAM unit cost and where is the best place to source it? Mine is a S211 E320 CDI 55 Plate.

Also is it something I could do myself or best left for a specialist?

Not a DIY job unless you have a Star :( No idea about cost, but a SAM for a Smart Roadster is around £450

Certainly take a look on the connectors to the SAM and spray if necessary with a non drying switch cleaner, if it is fine in the dry then some good damp fault

Check for any green algae on the pins

Sorry for my ignorance, but could you advise where the SAM is located? I have read some posts where they talk about front and rear SAMs. Would WD40 be a non drying switch cleaner?

It is 30 in the picture, there are many numbers for them, I do not like WD40 much but it will do the job
