Hi all, so if you look at my previous posts I have asked about changing the thermostat on my W210 220 cdi, well today I braved the cold tempretures and changed the thermostat, for starters which idiot decided to design the thermostat with that stupid little rubber pipe coming out the bottom and its so tight in there with all the fuel pipes and what not!!! anyway, enough bitching! I was sooooo careful trying not to damage any of the fuel pipes located around the thermostat but I was obviously not careful enough because I managed to snap one of them!!! yes the air was blue!!! the pipe I have snapped is the one from the pressure relief valve (located on the fuel rail) which at the other end is a T piece - its the T piece I have managed to snap. My local stealer has one in stock which I will collect tomorrow morning, but of course there is now air in the fuel system and the car wont start - i know this cos I tried turning it over and she wouldnt start! So, once I have all the new piping fitted, can someone confirm what the start proceedure is for the W210 220 cdi is when there is air in the fuel system? Do I have to bleed the fuel system? if so, how do I do that? If I dont have to bleed it, do I just turn it over and eventually it will start?

Thanks

You are not the only one to have done that,, the same thing happened a few day ago to a member.

As long as there is no air in the filter, and there should not be then it will start.

What makes it hard is that you can compress air but not the fuel, so the starter has to be spun quite a lot to build up enough pressure to get the air out

There is no set way to bleed it, others will dis-agree but the only way to bleed a cdi is to crank it untill it starts, that is also the mb way of starting them, foot flat to the floor and crank it!!

I always use a vacuam device on the outlet of the fuel filter(when changing the filter).
Almost instant start up & then keep the revs up at about 1500 for ten seconds.
Not fully relevant to your question, but good advice as our local commercial dealer has a few horror stories about leggy Vitos knackering their high pressure pumps when run dry!
It only takes a couple of seconds,& may not be fully necessary, but do we need the grief(& expense) of even a one off?

First of all thanxs to you guys, you helped bring back my Vito 112 back to life after a removal and change of a corroded fuel line and while i was there a change of the thermostat that had decided to stick open.
It was a case of the ussual story, Id been told the Vito was self bleeding and would start and purge with just cranking the engine but didnt, After filling the fuel filter with a clean washing up bottle of all things with derv and a can of easy start, she coughed back to life with the jump leads connected and has been sweet so far, Two mechanics and an AA guy failed to get her going along with her flat battery, with the story "theres an air lock" it needs to go to MB main dealer so i am forever in your debt. Thankyou !

I'm the other 'twit' who manged to break the pipe!!!

Hope you managed to replace it OK, but if you haven't got around to it yet, here are a couple of tips which could help.

Firstly undo the bolt holding the pressure release valve on top of the engine, this frees the pipe up & should help prevent overstraining it whilst replacing the thermostat.

Just for anyone else looking at this it is possible to jury rig it by blanking off the hole left in the broken union, I used a small section of rubber pipe, slit it up one side & slipped it over the hole (with the slit on the opposite side) slid a small hose clip on top & tightened it up.

No need to bleed it , the system does it automatically, just start the engine, it will turn over for a set period & if it doesn't start it will stop to prevent overtaxing things.....let it rest a moment & do it again & it should start. Mine did first time & spluttered to a stop, but was ok on the second attempt, initially a little lumpy but settled down very quickly.

It ran like this with no problem for a couple of weeks before I got around to sorting it out with a replacement pipe.

Don't forget to obtain the pipe clips which hold the pipes close into the engine & away from the fan/etc belt under the fuel pump, someone did suggest some plastic tie backs as an alternative if you don't replace the clip (I did this as I didn't know about the clip until I'd removed the pipes, the old one has held up to being re-used but I feel happier with the extra bit of security just in case it does give up one day. I used 2 & it works a treat, just don't strain anything too tight, you just want to prevent them from going forwards into the fanbelt if the clip fails)

It also pays to have one of those dentist type of mirrors on the end of a stick (I had to improvise with a small mirror stuck to a welding rod, but now have the said dentists type mirror, available at all car jumbles for a couple of quid, oh also a torch/inspection light.

Rob

PS. I didn't use the throttle I just stood outside the car to keep an eye on things & put my arm in through the window to turn the key.

Hi all,

I must have overlooked something! Last weekend C220 cdi would not start Air in low pressure fuel lines and diesel seeping from top of high pressure pump. Purchased a rebuilt high pressure pump from local company and new fuel filter, low pressure lines (3) from Mercedes.
Fitted yesterday and no fuel appeared in the new lines? To add to my confusion ECP error code on dash? Disconnected battery and charged overnight still no fuel and the error message appears when I switch thhe ignition on. Any help would be gratefully received.
