hi,
I have a 1995 Mercedes C220, and i just noticed this evening, that the Air Direction knob in the front, had no back light, I gently removed the knob and could not see any bulb there at all,

I know that the reostat in the dashboard controls the level of brightness to these controls amongst other things, so does that mean that fibre optics are lighting up this knob, if so, do i have to pull my instrument panel out again to locate the blown bulb ?

I'd appreciate someone telling me how to locate the blown bulb as I like to have it working :)

the rotational knob is the one to the left of my phone in this photo

Hi Anyweb,
Did this dial ever light up, because the bulb should be in the centre of the spindle ,mini-capless bulb 12v/ 1.5W I think. If the fan speed control dial on the other side lights up I suggest you pull it off to check the fitment as it will be the same.

hi, yes of course it lit up, i've only noticed that it's not lighting now,

i had a similar problem before with my old 190d (now sold) but the bulbs in it were clear to see and easy to replace

after a quick examination of this car i cannot see any bulb to replace hence this post

hmm...
cheers

Anyweb, Your car is the same as mine and I have replaced these bulbs in the past .The bulb is set deep in the centre spindle and you will need pointed nose pliers to remove it ; very carefully. There is a clip over the end of the spindle which must be removed first. Look closely and you will find the bulb; as i said ,take the knob off the other side and turn the lights on and it will be obvious.

A bit of perspex, Tom ?
Lol. Geo.
'Perspex'? You're dating yourself George! You can't possibly be as old as I, Spitfires, Hurricanes and 'pop' rivets - even then? Mind you, look at the Merc in my Avatar!!
P.S. As for the guitar, that was 'way before the 'Gibson'!

Perspex is still made (ICI) and used in back lighting above shops, it cost an arm and leg, something like £300 for a full sheet of 2mm thick.

Tom,
Not that old, born in Cupar, not far from you in 1950, stayed in Springfield when I was a nipper ,then we moved to Lanarkshire where I still reside for my sins. LOL !!!
Pop rivets were a new innovation when I started my engineering apprenticeship , I know how to form a proper snap rivet head ; didn't realize pop rivets went back as far as the early 40's.

Hi,

I have just changed a bulb behind the fan speed dial on a E320 CDI W210.
Take the dial off, an behind a platic flap you will see a bulb, (You have to get the right replacement bulb because they have different output wattage and you don't want to cook the internal plastics ....).

I tried to pull the bulb out with pliars but the tip was to too weak, so I super glued the inner of a straw, placed it around the bulb, let it set and pulled it out :).

Then when it came to replacing it, used a the other end of the straw, position the bulb over the holder and pushed the bulb into the holder by inserting into the straw a thin lolli-pop stick !

Better than taking the whole dash apart....
enjoy.

Rana,
Good thinking on the removal and fitting tools ,I agree these bulbs are awkward and fragile. I assume you have kids in that you have ready access to such equipment.

tonight (believe it or not, first time ive had a chance to look at this problem again) I had a closer look and i could see what i think is a small bulb behind a white piece of plastic,

how do i remove that white piece of plastic without breaking it ? to get at the bulb underneath

and do i need to buy a replacement bulb in a merc stealer or can i get one in a regular garage like statoil ?

thanks for the 'straw' advice !

Hi,

You can't remove the white platic, just tape it back and get to the bulb.

i've had another look and the white piece of plastic that covers the bulb, actually swivels out of the way to let you access the bulb,

great, now I need to find a straw and i'm in business,

thanks for the advice !

cheers
