The injectors are different iirc, but they can be remapped very similar.
The later 350 with the blue efficiency injectors has more injections per combustion event, and are noticeably more fuel efficient. The trade off is a slight hesitancy when pulling from rest. You’ll need to be in a w212 for one of those though.
I have 212 E350CDI with the 642 engine over the year I get 48MPG, but I do very little town driving.
In the summer I tour Europe I then see 52-54 mpg on long runs.
