A black box recorder may help the insurance - and your peace of mind.

Not very street cred for him though.

Smal hatches are cheap/reliable - Saxo, Corsa, Fiesta etc.

He is 18, I know insurance is going to be high.

He looked at the 'black box' John, but like you said not cool.

He knows what he wants, its for things to look out for on a test drive, engine sound, odd knocking.......

I am not too sure how much those mods affect the insurance, but I would guess as a first time insurer, many will just consider him too high a risk and refuse to quote

Good point some of those bean tin minis are awful in a crash and statistics are its a possibility.
If I remember well the cars safety helps its insurance rating for younger drivers.

I think horrible to look at but smart cars, are amazingly robust.
Seen one in far better shape than the other older car in head on.
No idea what insurance is like for them, but might be a consideration.
I should imagine they are very cheap as people are desperate to sell them.

One thing you have to be careful with is if the car has been modifed ..ie lowering springs, etc the insruance company may disown him if he has a claim ..they wont tell you upfront tho.. so make sure all mods are noted and quoted.

What i did when my son turned 18 and wanted a car probably wasn't the norm but I bought a 3 year old Focus 1.8 petrol, unmolested by modifications and one previous owner. The car was a 99T and it is still in the family today having been passed down the lineage so as to speak. To his credit he looked after it and it was never raced rallied etc which demonstrates that young people can be responsible when asked.

Hope this helps!

Nice car but all those mods will send the insurance premium into orbit

Even without the mods VWs are seriously unreasonable to insure compared to the usual suspects (saxo corsa fiesta etc)
I would recommend the black box, my son uses its on line facility as a point of pride as to how well he drives - a totally different story to some of his more reckless friends who have all managed to have accidents in their first 6 months

The Golf looks ncie but the mods will definitely not help, even though most are cosmetic.

Just make sure you insure yourself on the policy too as it will bring his premium down
