Hello!,
I am new to forum and MB. Actually I am planning to buy a 00/02 E220 or 270 cdi. Thanks to you I have learned a lot about MB. Maybe too much?!! I mean I was all excited about stepping up from VW....and then RUST:shock: poped out! More I dig, more comes out from this forum....Whats going on?
How bad is this issue? I really want to buy this car, but somehow I feel that I am getting into the lemon era (W210) of E-class. Rust wise of course....Is this enough reason to stay away from w210?
The W124 is too old for me .....W211 still too expensive....so what now?... back to vw and audi?:(
Please tell me that is not a big deal....tell me that its easy to fix....or that is barely noticeable....somehing....anything!!
Once you convinced me, you can go ahead and tell me which one should i go for: 220 or 270....
Thank You!

Hi & Welcome,

I have a W210 and have had it for 4 yrs. I am very happy with it and the very small amount of corrosion it had was covered under the 30 yr warranty last December. Just go into the deal with your eyes open and you should be fine. I would also go for the 320cdi but then again I'm biased. :)

BTW do you have links to the Canadian railways?

Where are you? In the uk, there was no 270cdi on a 210 - it only came in on the 211.
As Blobcat says, there are many of us that are/were quite happy with the 210.
Yes, rust was an issue, but for most, a small one. Make sure the key areas have been treated, or that MB will fix them, and you can relax for the most part. Go in with your eyes open and you should be able to pick up a nice motor.
As to engine, the 220 is sweeter than the 270 and for normal use has sufficient power to not embarras you. The 270 does have a nice kick when woken, not quite as nice as the 320 but the economy is much better. 4-5mpg when I tested them. In real world use, there is maybe 1-2mpg between the 220 and 270.

I have seen one W210 270cdi on ebay, according to the seller it was a special factory order at the time.

Thank you guys for your inputs!
I am in Romania right now....And I am planning to buy it from germany.....thats why I am a bit worried about Waranty, and MB fixing the rust problem. I will keep my eyes on those rust spots....
At this point I will search for 220/270/320......whichever comes first at the right price....
here's a link with 270cdi/W210
