I have been considering buying a Mercedes for some time now, in fact far too long. The problem I have is that when trading in my car I always get a newer one, however for me to trade up to a Mercedes i would have to get an older one.
I just can't accept I would have too, so I have waited and waited until I could afford not only the step up, but a newer version.

However the time has still not come, so one solution was to consider mercedes salvage. There is a site I use reguarly to view cars from all over the UK, I wont mention it yet as I don't know if that is within the rules of the forum.

My point is this, somehow mercedes salvage goes for more than other makes of cars. In fact i can't see why anyone would buy mercedes salvage as by the time the repairs were done, you would have paid more than buying private. yet people still buy these car in this condition.

So what is the secret?
How do you buy Mercedes salvage to save money, rather than lose money?
are there cheap car parts supppliers, repairers out there or what?

Hello and welcome to the MB forum.

One thing that happens is that many see these cars, and they look cheap and a lot of car for the money, but are very expensive to fix.

Flood examples show a car with no damage, but to fix the electrics is almost an impossible job.

Prices of late have been dropping fast, and not reached the bottom yet

Thanks

Hi Malcolm

Thanks for the reply.
My point was more about that in many cases, some cars don't even look cheap.

It seems just too obvious that in man cases it would not be cost effective to repair, but they sill sell.

Of course someone did mention to me after i had made the post, that some salvage cars are bought by breakers, because the sum of the parts can be many times the price of the car and that caertain parts from mercedes are very hard to get and attract a high premium.

This has pretty much made my mind up, I wil just have to wait to get what I want.

Thanks Again
Mark

Breakers. That's who buys them, I reckon.

Mercedes just don't seem to appear in 'normal' scrap yards. I've got a very good one not far from me, and I've visited them a few times looking for bits, and each time I'm told 'Sorry, but we don't get any Mercs in here'.

Luckily, I also have a specialist Mercedes breaker near me!!

Buy a really old one, apart from the slightly iffy MPG even a 30 odd year old W114 is perfectly useable and wont depreciate, a minty perfect condition 280ce will go for about 7 grand, spend an extra grand getting it fitted with a decent LPG set up and away ya go.

Theres a mercedes scrappy near me but he wanted 500 quid for an engine for my 1975 200, i can buy a whole car for that or less if its rusty, he said he only had one engine left as a couple of nigerian guys turned up with a container and bought almost all the old engines and gearboxes he had to take back abroad with them, i had a couple of black guys with heavy accents chasing me down the road in Rainham trying to buy my old 220 off me, dunno why they love em so much?
