I am a big fan of the Mercedes Sl and am looking to buy one of the models made between 1971 and 1989, preferably a later model.
It will be my only car so it will need to run well. I live in London and do not use my car everyday so mileage will still be low over the course of a year.
I was wanting some advice on which models were the most reliable and what common problems I should be aware of during my search.
Thanks

body body body, rust rust rust. Everything else can be fixed, probably, it's a Merc after all. search this site on 107 or SL and see what comes up. Also check SL107.com quite useful in an american kind of way.
Welcome aboard.

later ones - 300, 420 and 500. Although 500 is probably most desirable, the 300 will give you the best mileage. As with any older car obviously one with full history, but mileage isnt so much of an issue. check wheel arches, inside boot and sills for rust. Later ones are much better protected for rust. as myros said theres lots of info on the net about these cars and it really helped me when i bought mine, get a good one and you will get loads of pleasure from what is a lovely car
