Hi Willie
Had same prob with my 97 c250.[Cruise off as well?] Diagnostics said it was one of two things. One was a failed wheel sensor the other was some electrical component under the dash on the drivers side which I'm afraid I can't remember the name of. Turned out to be the sensor anyway but mech. replaced the electric thingy first so whole thing cost me about £170. I don't think you need any sophisticated equipment to check the sensors so any indie could probably do it with a multimeter.
Cheers
Pete

Yep.....brake lite switch is most likely to be suspect. Common fault.

It twist's off to remove it.
