Hi all

I have had the above car since beginning of January 2009 and I am happy with it but the car has a problem with the manual gear box milage 72000 miles.

1, When the car is left over night , and then started ,1st and second gears very hard to shift also hard to get reverse gear I know better then to force it ,thing is with engine off I can get any gear, go up and down the gear box like a racing driver.

2, The gear box also jumps out of gear 1st and 3nd gear made me jump the first time has anyone come across this problem the cars be back to the garage were I got it from they said it could be oil bulking in the gear box but I'm not sure if this problem would explain it jumping out of gear.

Any help would be great .

Hello Mark,, the 716 gear box Should only be filled to within 10mm of the top of the oil filler stand pipe, to help stop the bulking into 1st and 2nd when cold.

If the box jumps out of gear, this shows that some bushes and shafts need modifying, the face of the teeth have worn so that the gear is pushed out, and this will only get worse

So looks Like I should have gone for an auto, try to take my hand off tonight when it jump off first gear, is this common as there's not a lot on the web ?

What the best way to fix replace the parts in the gear box , or the gear box

so can someone tell me how MB did not change the oil in the first three years or is the gear box on the way out because the last owner crash the box for four years would I be better trying to get the car replace with an auto I won't get the mpg I'm getting at the moment average 43.5

and I've seen 60.1 on a long run, around town 38 to 42 anyone got real figures for an auto.

hi mark , I have the same problem with my 62,000mile C270cdi manual jumping out of first gear.
I have found that by putting it into second before trying to get first gear that it reduces the number of times it jumps out.
I have yet to find any information on the cost of replacing the gearbox or the cost of repairing the gearbox.

There are parts to fix this rather than a new box, any good mechanic can fix them, I used to rebuild gearboxes years ago, it is only a matter of setting up the end float on the shafts
