Hi to all, I’m new to the forum because I’m trying to help my father in law who has owned his 1999 c 240 from new which has always been looked after and is in immaculate condition. Problem is that the other week he tried to start the car and it wouldn’t fire up, local garage identified the external pump as the issue and replaced it, a day later it wouldn’t start again so they replaced the new pump again, next day same problem. They have had the car back and diagnostic tells them that the ECU is faulty and should be changed. Merc want over 1k to do this work but have told the old man that if the fault persists he can’t get his money back but they will charge him more to find the further fault. I’ve heard that you can swap over the ECU along with associated parts but not sure what is needed or how it’s done. My thinking is that it’s cheaper to swap the ECU with a second hand unit for a few hundred and if that rectifies the issue then he’s good to go. Also could it be a persistent wireing break or relay. I’m not sure as I’m not familiar with Merc but I’m handy in the engine bay. Please let me have your thoughts on this as it would be a shame to see this car on the scrap heap.

I doubt it's the ECU as each time they change the pump the car presumably runs?
Take it to decent Mercedes independent specialist if you haven't already.
If you let us know where you are we can suggest someone known to to be good.

I’m going to see him this afternoon to have a good look over it. Apparently they got the car back to him by bridging something ( I assume a relay ) but not sure until I see the car. He’s in Cannock in the midlands, I told him last night that if the pump runs now and the car starts then how can it be the ECU but he’s 73 years old and not good with motors.

Fingers crossed it’s an easy fix and I would also presume that the garage tested the relay. I’ll let you know.

Update. The car started and ticked over for over half an hour, I phoned the garage to get an idea of what they have checked over. The mechanic is going to send me the info but he tells me that there was a recurring fault code for the ECU so that’s why they recommend a replacement. At that point they cleared the codes and the car ran and was dropped back at my father in laws. The problem is that he is VERY reluctant to drive the car any distance just in case the car stalls or stops while on the road. I have asked a local tech mechanic to diagnostic the car at home but not sure I d he will find any problems if the car is running.

If the car can be got to Walsall then take it to ACMS. Marc there will be able to sort the problem. He's ex MB and possibly the best Merc independent in the Midlands. Tel no 01922 634666. Tell him Graham sent you. I'e been using him for years.
