C 250 td Misfire/ poor performance

Could anyone shine any light on my problem, I have just purchased a 1998 C250 TD, 129,000 miles, There is a slight misfire/judder under light acceleration at low revs and also the turbo seems to cut out at around 2800 rpm, the car seems very underpowered, my 2.0 td vectra is quicker. When I bought the car there was lots of free play in the accelerator cable so I adjusted the outer cable at the pump to take the play out, could I have upset something by doing this. Any help would be appreciated. Thankyou.
