Dear Mercedes owners,

I have recently bought a Mercedes C200 (2017 plate).
Without wishing to sound ungrateful (it is a lovely, safe car) there are some very basic things that seem to have been omitted by the makers!

Please correct me if am mistaken - in fact I hope you do....!

First of all, the display is clunky and seems to freeze when turning the dial. Does anyone else have this issue?

Another niggle is the fact the windows can only be operated with the key in the ignition.
My previous car was a Vauxhall Vectra (2005 plate) - lovely car - even that car had the feature to allow for windows to be operated using just the key fob!!

Handy on a hot day!

I wanted split screen to have the navigation and radio up and the same time, but nooooo.....too much to ask. All I could manage was to get the navigation on the main screen and radio on the small screen behind the steering wheel. Which of means the digital speedometer must be sacrificed.

Picky and fussy?

Maybe. But if this is all too much to ask, then the price tag should reflect. This is the real world, you pay for quality so you expect it!!!

Please help....

Many new Mercedes were customer ordered spec and according to budget.
When I bought my first second hand Mercedes in 1982 it was well optioned. I needed a wiring diagram for my car, and apparently there were 8 different diagrams because of the options.
I have had a few Mercedes and worked on hundreds and can say not all Mercedes are equal. ;)

Well, I'll bet your Merc drives a lot better than the old Vauxhall. Focus on the positives, those W205s are good looking vehicles and I'd be surprised if it isn't bristling with driver comforts and subtle accessories. As for "losing" your digital speedo, perhaps <ahem> you should be focusing on the road not the radio display?

Less options less to go wrong. Mb don't support many after order options wiring harness are order specific so they get u at point of order. Eg if u have non folding mirrors the harness does not have the ability for a retro fit. ( at least that's how it was explained to me.)
So if u buy used, check its already specced as you want.

Digital speedo is nice, but to be honest it wouldn't bother me if I lost it. Maybe get used to looking at the speedo dial ? If the needle is at 9 o'clock you are going quite slowly, if it moves to the 12 o'clock position, you are going quite fast. If it moves round to 4 o'clock you are doing 200 mph.

On my speedo dial, the numbers increase to 20 mph increments at 120 mph, so watch out for that.

On most modern cars the windows only operate with the key in the ignition, even our old Landrover is like that, so probably something you will need to get used to. I think it is done for security, so children can't trap their heads and other body parts in the windows. My neice still managed to hurt her fingers on one occasion. Kids seem to have a great fascination with electric windows.

Merc do somethings half ar5ed .... I could shut the windows of my Senator & Omega sat in my front room but because Merc uses infrared it means I've to stand feet next to the driver's door.

Hello and welcome.

Your car will have the NTG5*2 control system which is quite modern and the same as my car. It should not be slow and clunky. As has been said above, you can open the windows from outside but you have to be stood near to the driver's door for the infra-red to work.

it is fairly easy to switch between the radio and Nav screens once you get used to it. Once the radio is on, do you need that screen showing? And if you have the radio screen showing, the Nav spoken instructions will still be audible. Personally, I like the digital speedo so I always have that visible and only use the big screen for Nav, music etc.

it does take a while to get used to a new make of car so ask away if you have any other questions.

Thank God I have a full clean driving licence - despite listening to music/news occasionally!
Bristling - hmmmm...many things missing.
Listing them sounds ungrateful.
On the other hand, Mercedes aren't running a charity and their cars - used or new - have the price tag to match the name. You expect it to have certain features. That's just me I suppose.

I've been surprised at the distances that my car's key blipper works. Last week we had a slightly fraught journey to a restaurant, my mind elsewhere. We'd just sat down when a thought came, "did I lock the car?" I got up, went just outside the door, and tried the blip. Indicaters flashed, horn tooted and the car was too far away to hear a clunk, but the mirrors folded. Job done, and from about 50 yards away.

I think you have discovered that although it is not mentioned in the name like Ford of old e.g. L, GL etc, there are levels of features. A C200 is probably quite a budget model for MB so whoever ordered it spec'd it accordingly. Maybe an ex-company car?
What you don't see immediately are the 1000's of little touches that have gone into making the car that you might not find on more mainstream makes.

I think it uses radio for locking but infra-red for window opening, hence the different operating distances.

If nothing else, it’s 12 years ahead of your old car so there must be a lot of improvements.

Don't confuse quality for gadgets. They are two very different things.

To open/close windows from outside point the key at the driver's door and press and hold the lock or unlock button. Unlock the windows should all come down. Lock they should all go up.

Agreed, set the seat correctly, put all the vents to their mid point, set the temp and you'll get out at the end of a multi-hour drive comfortable. There's very few manufacturers that can get the heating and ventilation system to work correctly without hot or cold spots.

Older Mercs had this too but apparently the circuit board soldering attached to sensor in door handle wasn't great so stopped working after a while.
Don't know if all Mercs do it but when driving or coming to a standstill long press of recirc button should close everything.

I wonder if it is still on the road. I don’t see that many Vauxhalls from the same era as my 203 about.
