Hi

I wonder if you could help, I'm considering buying the new C Class saloon as I have had many issues with current vehicle which is a BMW.

Before I take the plunge is there anything I should be aware of before I this type of car? Also has anyone used the UMI with the Audio 20 stereo on this type of vehicle as I would like to use it for my IPhone and can the satnav pickup speed cameras at all?

Apologises for all the questions.

Si

Hello and welcome, the latest C class is a good car, do check that you find the seats comfortable, and that is about the only criticism that has been on here.

The comand cannot pick up speed camera's, but its nice to have there are small detectors that can be fitted, and they do comply with all new phones etc

I have an '08 model (latest) C220cdi Estate, now with 12K on the clock. Seems fine. Slight rattle on perspex speedo binnacle (fixed temporarily by me by wedging a piece of rubber bewteen perspex and binnacle); also a few very slight creaks on dash but I ma picky! I would like to know if others have such 'problems'. Using car in C mode yet seems quick enough and returning 42mpg average since new on a brim to brim test.

I have a UMI fitted and the satnav is pretty good (been to South of France with it and across UK). No it does not pick up speed cameras etc. I think the UMI is well worth the money.

As televsion has said - check the seats. It took me a while to find the corrcet positionig of seat/seatback etc. Fortunately I have memory seats so I can experiment and then go back to the more comfortable setting. I consider the seats to be OK and adjustment is the key.

Anything else you would like to know?

Thanks for your reply. I assume you have the Sport model of the 220, this is the version I'm looking at buying but the saloon. I'm also looking at getting my IPhone connected to the stereo and have full use of the IPod function via the head unit which I believe the UMI can do this. I know you can buy a cradle that the IPhone can plug into and a cable can run from this to the UMI.

I actually have the Elegance model. Yes the UMI can control the ipod function. I use the UMI to control a USB stick with my music on it and the speedo display and the UMI screen show the track being played.

Thumper - Agree with what you say! I do have a couple of minor squeaks or vibrations (one on the instrument binnacle perspex - fixed temporarily by me with a piece of rubber) and also a squeak at times on the dash somewhere. I am picky though!

As a matter of interest what mpg are you getting - measured brimmed tank to tank as the computer is not always accurate (mine reads 4-8% optimistic). I get 41mpg accurate at present with 12K on the clock. Are you in 'C' or 'S' mode?

Hi and welcome.

My 2008 has only 10,000km, but it has been through two of our tough winters, and, perhaps more telling, two spring thaws, with potholes and broken road to shake your fillings out -and you can't dodge em all!

One small intermittent buzz in the drivers door is the only resulting "noise". Considering it has 45 tires, this is pretty good.

Nothing has failed to work as its supposed to, (though the wipers "could do better" as my school reports used to say). Still, any new car will do this for a while. Body quality is what you should get expect in an expensive car, a 5 star crash rating, and longevity. The MB has the first two, only time will prove the last.

Back seat is a bit tight, if this matters to you. The fold down rear seats are a very useful option.

I find it a pleasure to drive.

Umi c200

I have just got a new (2009) C200CDI Sport estate and am well pleased having been a Jaguar fan previously - although the MB Dealers leave a lot to be desired!
I have just had a UMI fitted and it is brilliant - although dealer had two attempts to sort out installation problems - all to do with vehicle programming. The Nav system is to repeat via the centre binnacle. Now all working. This problem has also been reported on the forum.

The Iphone (3Gversion O/S 3) works well except for uploading your address book. Fortunately a knowledgeable person on this forum suggested a fix and it is now working properly. You need to place you addresses on another bluetooth phone (in my case a Motorola RazV3) and individualy send each address via the business card function. A pain as you have to send each address individually, however the fix works well. Incidentally I have done all this useing a MAC. Hope this is helpful - if more needed please send a PM.

Keith100 - If you discover the sorce of the 'buzz' in the driver's door, please let me know as I have the same. I thought it was from the central locking button but locking or unlocking this does not seem to make any difference; similarly the glass appears firm all round so it is not a vibration there.

Hi Folks,
I can confirm that the 204 is a big improvement on the 203, although I doubt if the MPG will ever get near that of the new Passat diesels. Still averaging out at around 43 with a mix of shopping trips and longer journeys is reasonable for an automatic. Incidentally, the computer is very accurate.

The on-board Blue Tooth works very well, but address books have to be down loaded as described in an earlier post.

Ours is an Elegance, although we did try a Sport, but found the seats too grippy and the suspension a bit harsh. Ours also has a 17 inch wheel upgrade, and although softer than the Sport, is still a bit firmer than we would like. If I had the option again I would probably go for the standard 16 inch wheels. In addition, there can be a bit of noise from the back on certain surfaces which can be a bit tiresome.

Otherwise the car had a good spec at a good price and I'm hopeful that we will be able to sort out the ride and noise at the first tyre change....so may well ask for advice nearer the time!

Ours is now at 8500 miles and there don't seem to be any gearbox or transmission problems. However, the first to second change seems to delay at times longer than expected, to 2500rpm. Another car I have driven was similar, so I take it that this is typical.

Think that is about it; no rattles or squeaks so far, but the seats do need to be adjusted to suit, particularly if you are around 6 foot tall, and by the way, the middle rear seat is not a place to be for a long journey!

Hope this helps,

Ernie
