Hi guys and girls,

This is my first post here. I'm hoping you can help me with my next car purchase
As the title suggests, I'm looking to possibly buy a Mercedes Coupe circa 2001-2003, with a budget of less than £7k There seems to be a few around fro this price which I wasn't expecting, but now I know they're affordable, what are they like?
I'm fairly mechanically minded, and always do my own service work. How reliable are these cars generally?

Any help would be greatfully recieved...

Thanks in advance.

Matt

Hello Matt

Sorry no one has replied earlier.

I've no personal experience of the C class coupe but can offer some general advice :

At this age you must check for rust - around wheel arches, boot lid etc.
Mercedes only started to galvanise bodies in 2003 (there is a thread on this on the forum) so if possible try to find one with the build date (not reg date) post the quarter in which galvanising commenced.

As with all Mercedes, leather and an automatic box will help when you eventually sell.

Good hunting.

As Peter above really just stressing the point on the bodywork,,do check carefully in the area's mentioned for any blisters or bubbles in the paint

Thanks for the pointers. Are they prone to rust?

Another, more generic question...

There seems to be two models called the C230K. One of which has a 1.8, 4 pot supercharged engine producing 192 bhp. The other is a 2.3, 4 pot producing 197 bhp....
Aside from the obvious power/fuel economy, is one engine better than the other? - I was surprised the 2.3 wasn't a 6 pot...

My first Merc was a 220cdi coupe, Reg Dec 2002 and the rust element is a factor you need to address,VERY careful examination of front wing edges as already said and the rear wing front lower edge near the door bottom corner.

I did'nt really want a coupe but as an introduction to a Merc mine turned out a good buy as Mercedes did all the rust I found under warranty, new wings and all areas painted to a very high standard.

Leather seats,Panoramic glass roof and Evo wheels set the car off really well.
It was taxed, had a full years MOT so apart from a £2+ plastic parking brake ratchet which took me 5 minutes to fit, thats the only problem I had in 13 months. The mpg was excellent with a computer reading of 50+ mpg on just about any journey over 10 miles if driven sensibly.

Mine was a manual and the auto is favoured but FSH is essential. The good experience made me buy the 220cdi Avantgarde and I'm still very happy.
