C Class
Considering a C Class diesel and was just wondering what people's views are of the new 2.0 diesel vs the previous generation 2.1 diesel engine.
Car will be used as main car as well as to tow a caravan of approx 1.5t.

Hello and welcome,

Depends if you’re likely to go near a ULEZ zone

I’d go for a C350CDI or preferably an E350CDI

I have a E350CDI had it 11 years, a brilliant car.

Somehow a 2.0 C-class doesn’t strike me a tow car. (I don’t tow anything so not experienced, but never see a c-class on the roads).

I've towed my Jayco Swan which is about 1200kg or so and it tows with ease - I've got the 2.1L OM651 engine (single turbo / pre-AdBlue) and a factory fitted HD tow hitch - I believe the tow capacity of a C-Class wagon is 1800kg for the MY13.

Never had an issue other than fuel consumption but I tend to keep it under 100klm/hr. I've also got a Redarc electric tow controller fitted to help with braking as the vans got electric brakes. Also think you need to keep the tranmission cool with a transmission cooler.

Its a good compromise as when I commute to work I'm consistently getting 4.7l/100klm but also have the torque to pull the can when required.

If your around 1200kg the OM651 seems okay but yes heavier I'd go for a V6 or a twin stage turbo CDI 250 for the extra torque.
