Hi, just new. Any advice much appreciated
Rear nearside electric window stopped working months ago. Didnt bother about it. However a week ago the drivers window and door mirror stopped working. A day or so later the front passenger window and door mirror also ceased to function. Rear offside has always been fine. I disconnected the rear nearside motor to see if that was kicking out the whole system but that did not work. I then disconnected/reconnected the neg battery terminal and Lo and Behold all windows and door mirrors, apart form the disconnected one, started working again!! BUT, later on same day, drivers window and door mirror broken again. How does this system work? Is there perhaps a control unit or relay that is reset by the power off/on or are all the electrical gubbins part of the motors? The windows do have a position memory function as you have to reset that with the buttons after a battery disconnect. Dont know which component provides that function. Any ideas?

Update - 7/8/05 12:13 - Disconnected/reconnected battery again and all connected windows/door mirrors working again. Set the one touch open/close ok as well. Need to find out what the battery disconnect/reconnect might be resetting.

Well, what do you know? The only window that has been working through this problem has now been disconnected (I stupidly removed the door panel and disconnected the plug when some smart arse commented that I could have just taken the fuse out!) and the problem seems to have gone.
So....looks like the control unit in the rear offside door which is an integral part of the motor/regulator is faulty. I am ordering a replacement from Dronsfield breakers (£45) and will let you know if I have further probs.
Bottom line is that this CAN sytem on Mercs is so complex that if it goes wrong no-one seems to know how to determine the failing unit. Back to motorcycles for me and, no, it wont be a BMW.

I've had exactly the same issue...

First my from electric windows stop. I had the windows fixed by the dealer at first (for £100 labour) but they failed again after a fortnight - then the interior light on opening failed, then the central locking and the door mirrrors. (with a fortnight between each new failure being added)

The car finally failed (wouldn't start) - but all recovered once the battery was disconnected and then re-connected.

However, now the front windows have failed again !

I don't want to spend £100 every fornight, for it only to re-occur - all ideas welcome.

Thanks

A class electric windows gremlin

Hi Guys, the electric windows on my A140, 2000 model have kind of stopped working, very puzzling. The drivers side front window will stop working after running the car for about 5 minutes and then the other windows, starting from the left rear also stop working.
However if you switch the ignition off and on again the windows start to work again.
I have tried replacing the main centre console four way switch with one from a breakers yard but the problem still persists.
Is there a relay that might need replacing?
Any ideas welcome please.
