I need help on choosing my next car.

its going to be on contract hire and I have narrowed it down to a C-Class
my budget stretched either to a
C200 CDI Sport Auto
or
C180 Sport Auto

my current car is a lexus is220d..its my first ever oil burner and I have to admit Ive not been all that impressed with it...its not very economical im getting 36mpg and the turbo lag has caught me out a few times.

however, that said, I am willing to give a diesel another go.
or my other option is the C180..performance wise on the data sheet its not a lot between the two..but a 1.6l engine seems rather small for the car....whats everyone elses thoughts?

You'll notice a big difference if you get to drive them both ......... could you not streach to a 220 ?? .maybe change from sport to Elegance ? ......... that would cover it ...... I did the same exercise 4 months ago ........... the elegance in some ways is better specced ..and has active suspension, that goes hard round corners anyway.

Lexus are crap ...... come on, your on an MB forum ........... lol

Diesel every time. Lots more torque will make it more relaxing to drive. Diesel + auto is an ideal combination. Fuel economy may well exceed your expectations (and the published figures).

I had a c200 cdi auto on a 53 plate, mine had 122 hp the later ones have 150. Although a very capable car I always wished for more power. fuel eco will be little different as share same block& head. as another poster said go for the 220 cdi

thanks for the replies.

I prefer the look of the sport over the elegance.
it looks as though all the lease companies have good deals on the 180 and the 200cdi..and shoot up on anything else..so I am really limited with only these two to chose from.

the tale of the tape from the manufacturers is as follows:

car 180 200cdi
bhp 156 136
torq 230 270
0-60 9.9 10.2
top 138 132
fuel 39.8 43.5 (combined)
co2 176 177

Depends on the type of use. If you do lots of miles, whilst the diesel will be tight to begin with (and will probably do 43.5 combined) I would expect it to slacken off beyond 10,000 and then give much better mpg. Other members who run these cars might like to comment?

to be honest, even though I had a poor expeirience with the lexus I am leaning towards the 200cdi.
I am going to give them a back to back test drive

How much is the gallon of diesel and petrol over there these days anyway?

Somehow I tend to prefer petrol engines, even if the torque and the economy of diesel engines are just superb.

Got 54 mpg out of the 220CDI recently and today in the rain got the back end out, nice. great point a squirt car.

I would check out if you are happy with the ride in a Sport as the suspension is hard and takes getting used to. When I changed from an Elegance I did not like it at first. Happy with it now but will gravitate back to normal when I next change. It plays my back up a bit and it does not like speed humps.
