You may have noted a thread about disgruntled deisel owners.

The thread stated and I agreed that the new C class Models have terrible fuel consumption in particular the C220 returns averages of 39mpg when the older ones were delvering well over 45 on a runin some cased 50+ on long jouneys which is amazing.

Having noted the problem and felt for both myself and the peolpe on here I took it up with my dealer who settled this , at least as best as possible.

This is what he said and I thank you for helping me have a better arguemtn for MB. Please keep me posted as I want a new one but cant afford the current fuel figures so I plan to stick to my current C220

Dear Mr Ritchie.

Many thanks for your enquiry regarding fuel consumption figures for the C220 which Andy Barnett has passed to me.

Further to investigation, I can confirm the following:

As part of the ongoing process of reducing emissions, and more specifically in an effort to meet the Euro 4 standard, a number of changes were made to this engine. The filters I believe you are referring to are a diesel particulate filter. This and a number of other changes have resulted in increased fuel consumption figures. These figures are reflected in the various sales brochures.

Mercedes-Benz are working to optimise the combustion process and these modifications are expected to be phased in to production vehicles in the coming months, and will then be available as a software update for vehicles previously delivered.

I hope that this answers the concerns that you raised, but if I can be of further help, please feel free to contact me.

Yours sincerely

what a load of tosh
So it supposedly reduces the black stuff from the back end but uses more fuel!
Very "caring of the planet minded"!
Makes a total mockery of what this nonsense is about really!

A question for you GlynC. What qualifies you to state that the explaination of the higher fuel consumption is a "load of tosh"? Do you fully understand the working function of DPF?

This is basically saying you may as well get the smoother, more powerful 5 (now 6) cylinder and not suffer a fuel consumption penalty.

Darcol,

I agree with you. I don't know all the detailed ins and outs, but it is perfectly plausible that particulate filters etc. would increase fuel consumption.

My concern is that with a filter, you can't check the healthy of the engine. For example, when the EGR valve on my 270 failed, I knew something was up because of the increased smoke, and it was renewed under warranty. If I had a particulate filter, and it was doing its job, there would be no extra smoke. But the particulate filter would be working overtime, and possibly needing earlier attention (after the warranty had expired, naturally). Unless there is some sensor which alerts if something is up.

Hello all, I have just recently purchased a C220 CDI Sport Edition Saloon and have spent some time recently discussing the fuel consumption of my car with the Service Manager at Swindon.

I can confirm that I have received exactly the same explanation as Howard.
I have been asked to run my car for another 1.5 months and then report back to them regarding the fuel consumption. My car has currently done 1,800 miles and returns approx 37 MPG. They are hoping that my car should increase by 1-2 MPG in the next couple of thousand miles.

At the same time they are expecting that a software "fix" will be available as part of their montly update. Allegedly a "fix" is going into new production vehicles within 2 months.

I'll report back when I have an update.

Basicly. Mercedes now, and have done since the mid 90's, send cars out as unfinished produducts and use the public(you new car owners)to evaluate and fix the cars as they find problems, instead of fully enginering the cars before they hit the roads!!!!!

Crazy :!!!!!!!!!! :???:

I just need to add. the particulate filter is to meet the EURO emmisons 4 regulations. It doesn't have anything to do with Mercedes. They have had this forced upon them as even tho deisel may be more economical, the particulates they give off is not healthy. so all cars that meet this regulation will have some form of particulate filter and will suffer the same. be aware that some manufacturers (icl. one German 1, not Merc) are quoting figures of MPG tested without Particulate filter, then the small print explains further. and this is beacuse they sell models outside of Europe.

From next year in Europe they must quote Euro4 MPG. but that aint yet.

still, it doesnt help matters when Merc dont just tell it how it is and leave us all to guess.
