A friend and I both have 2001 model C class 220 CDI on which the tail lamps keep blowing. These have now blown 4 times in the last 2 months on both our cars.

Can anyone offer advice?

Where are you sourcing your bulbs?

I have found that bulbs from halfords and the like are not identical to those from the stealership in that the shank is ever so slightly narrower, making the connection less than perfect.

I would try getting a bulb from the stealership in the first instance. If this new bulb also fails, I would suspect that there is a bad earth somewhere on the bulb circuit. Check the earth points or the bulbs both visually and with a multimeter to make sure they are sound.

Thnaks to one and all. I spoke to my local dealer who confirmed that this was a known problem on C-classes and that a fix was available. Shame that it took 3 visits for bulbs before they told me.
