Hi to you all,
I have a C Klass 270CDI 2002 model, i am having problems with engine power and it is smoking, The car was fine yesterday, I noticed the problem today, so took it for a spin around the block, i pulled over turned the engine off and looked for something obvious under the bonnet, i checked pipes etc and every thing seems ok. i took the air filter out, closed the air box and drove a little further but after about 30 seconds the power was non existent no kick down and barely would go over 40mph and it started to smoke again, lots of smoke. when the car is ticking over on the drive it does not smoke and sounds like it is fine.
Can any one shine any light on this matter? i would really appreciate some help.
thanks for reading.
Paul

An easy job, it will be the MAF filter want cleaning or replacement, see the heading at the top of this section.

It is a do it your self job, you take off the air filter box and at the end furthest from the rad it pushes into a black round plastic coupling about 6" high, that piece is the MAF, its worth cleaning first.

there is a detailed article heading this section on how to do it, either you clean it or replace, they are on Ebay but if you go to any Bosch agent the will have the insert in stock, and you screw that into your own plastic housing

Thanks again Malcolm, if we ever meet i will buy you a pint.
I am a newbie to these forums and so far have found it to be a great way of communicating with other merc owners.
when you say "there is a detailed article heading this section on how to do it" how do i find it, your probably thinking I'm a proper plum. please can you put the link on a reply for me.
Once again, thank you for your help.

Followed the cleaning process this morning and its still the same, low revs and barely reaching 40mph. Does any one know where i can get one from on-line or cheaper than a MB stealership?

Cheers

is that whilst stationary in neutral, or is that when driving? The cars have a rev limiter when in neutral to stop the engine from over-revving

It was tested on the drive, so i went for a spin and it was the same. i went on to euro car parts web site and located a MAF, costs £45 plus VAT plus £5 postage, i took the MAF out again to double check the part numbers and gave it a blow and a shake, I put it back in, i went for a drive....... the revs are going over 3000rpm but still feels sluggish, i drove up a long hill and it is still smoking, but on the flat it does not smoke. When i got the car back on the drive i floored the throttle peddle (in neutral) and the revs went up and over 3000rpm up to 4500rpm then i took my foot off the peddle.
Do you think it is just the MAF which in broke or is it sounding more expensive?

In genral there is nothing more than the MAF to give the symptons that you have. Your last test seem to confirm this.

Does £60 inc. VAT and postage, sound a fair price for a PIERBURG 434220200 AIR MASS SENSOR?
Will i damage my engine if i drive the vehicle any more than i have already, i know i have been driving around testing it but is it ok to drive it locally to the shops?
Thanks very much for all your help Malcolm and Robbo, I'll let you know my out come once i get it all sorted.

Too rich a mixture (smokes) is not good for long term motoring but tou will not do any harm. the price that you have been quoted is good.

Could be a sticking EGR valve? Have you had any fault codes read by a garage?

The EGR valve will only effect tickover or idle if it is stuck open, it is a divice that returns harmfull gasses back into the engine whilst cruising, it should be closed during idle, but if it is stuck partly open it will be lumpy at idle, Lambada maybe
