Can anybody help me to resolve my problem without me being rinsed at the merc dealer?

I was having difficulty locking and unlocking my 1997 Merc C200, i changed the batteries in the plastic keyfob only to find that not only do i still have the locking and unlocking problem but the car will NOT start either.

I have read that you can re-sync the key by pressing it twice and turning the ignition to position 2. No matter what I do the key in the ignition will Not turn in any position at all.

The owners handbook illustrates pointing the key to the interior mirror with red and green lights? my car does not have ANY lights in the mirror.
I have also tried depressing the lock and unlock buttons on the keyfob at the drivers door sensor as suggested by a merc salesman at my local dealership? This did not not work either.

This would have to happen to me on a bank holiday when the nations networks are closed for 3 days. If anybody has any resolution I would be extremely grateful.

P.s A merc green key was mentioned but i'm hoping to avoid this cost?:

Hi,
Because this problem started when you changed the fob batteries i would try another set, as this alarm system can be very tempermental the alarm fob sends two codes, 1 for the locking, 1 for the alarm. The batteries will work central locking ok but not the alarm so hence people think fob batteries are ok, as i have actually had batteries allegedally new that did,nt work straight out of the packet!
There is a way of bypassing the immobiliser, but try what i,ve just said first.
Also check this excellent 'How To' thread out as you could have a faulty key and this will tell you how to repair a potential problem.

Hope i have been of some help, let us know how you get on.

Central Locking & Ignition problem 2

Thank you for your replies but sadly nothing is working. It is almost as though I have someone elses key as the ignition does not recognise the key at all. Will not even turn to position 2. I have changed the batteries again to the 2nd set but still no joy. The key I have is for 1997 C2200 .... black plastic key fob with the three usual buttons: open and close buttons, and boot release. The emergency key is contained in the side of the key fob and slides out when needed (it is not the flick type). Sorry for delay, due to work commitments it is difficult for me to reply quickly but your suggestions are much appreciated.
