C is Comfort and the car will set off in 2nd gear when selected.
S is Sport and speeds up the gear changes and you start in 1st gear.

Normal mode will be Comfort. Just press that button and enjoy your car.
There isn't a button to turn off either. Its in C or S all the time depending on your selection.

I tend to only use S when for instance joining a motorway, on a slip road etc where I may want the extra acceleration to filter into fast moving traffic, occasionally when waiting to attempt an overtake on a single carriageway road. Other than that I leave the car in C. Look in the centre dash display and you'll see a C or S depending on which mode you've selected!!

C - 99% of the time for me.
S - on the odd occasion I need to win a traffic light Grand Prix. The 7g is far to dim witted to be left in S for any period of time.

Mine has E, economy and S, sport settings and I've only ever used S occasionally when being chased by the Police! I've often wondered how a gearbox settings can make you feel more 'comfortable' ?

Some days I am in an S kind of mood, but mostly I am in a C kind of mood. Why let rules guide you, go with your emotions.
My car changes up a gear at a lower rev range in C than it does in S. If I leave it in S it will rev much higher before changing up a gear.

they all drive better in C

S is just irritating and no faster - plus puts more wear smashing in to first and then needing to come out of it almost before it went in -

Its ONLY fitted to make German road rage more effective on the autobahn

I just sold mine so can't look in the handbook, but I remembered S = Standard,

I've got a pdf of a US W203 and that says S Sport, for standard driving!

I'm a 'wafting along' kind of driver but only ever drove mine in S. In C it was just too dimwitted - it was especially an issue from start as it would try and start in 2nd, but then drop to 1st with a jolt with anything more than the most gentle acceleration.

MB cars are not the only autos that will start off in 2nd .... a Rover P5B would do the same all those years ago. My ML will start normally start off in 1st, however when in SPORT I don't like the gear shift pattern so mine is almost always in AUTO ( mine affects the suspension too)

On the R its S and E.
It always defaults to E when restarting and 99% I just leave it there. In S it tends to hold a lower gear for a given road speed and I actually find it annoying. In E you just surf the torque.

I'm sure my R was C & S .... pressing it seemed to have no effect at all  but I never investigated it
