Tailing off from previous threads about thit whats consumption are you guys getting on a full tank of fuel? at the moment in "E" mode its on 220 miles with the last line left "quater tank" so I assume I will get under 300 miles - surely thats not good is it?

PS - I still have issues with viscous fan but car does not overheat so maybe thats making MPG go down too

TIA

Hi,

I do know how relevant my answer would be since my car is diesel, but the age is similar and the engine BHP is not far off. My C220D 1996, manual usualy makes between 500 and 550 miles per tank. If it is only city driving then it needs filling at 450 miles. On open road this car can do more than 600 miles.
This assumes filling when reserve light comes on and taking that with remaining 7l it can do about 50 miles.

Regards,

Pose.

Will do, what are you currently getting out of a full tank on "E" mode?

C180 petrol consumption.

Hi all.
I run a 97 C180 classic petrol (50K on the clock) and get an average of 380 miles to a full tank, I don't do many long runs, so i guess this is very good? I know its more miles per tank than i expected!:D :D :D

Thats excellent consumption! is that a manual or auto? I expect the MAF sensor may be to blame (so common on VW golf mk4) - so does anyone know if I can just unplug this MAF sensor and the ECU adapts to default values?

TIA

Hi All. Thats from an auto box, The guy i bought the car from told me the engine in my C 180 was the most economical engine ever made by Mercedes, I took this with a pinch of salt at the time, but i am beggining to believe him!

Here we go again.
You can only compare 2 C180s if you do the same journey at the same time.
Anything between 20mpg and 36mpg can be achieved from these engines. It all depends on how, where and when you drive, what the weather is like, if you have the aircon switched on, etc, etc. Even how lucky you are with the traffic lights that morning can have a drastic effect. E270, not C180 so the figures are different, however, If I do 5 miles into the city centre, I'll see maybe 23mpg. If I do the same 5 miles at the same time of day, but head in the other direction, where it's a straight run at 60 without stopping, that 23 can become 40.

With the C180, it is a tad underpowered but smaller than my old 220, so in traffic at standstill (idle) it will use less fuel to keep the cylinders running. If you do a lot of this (e.g. London) then the 180 will be a lot more economical. However, when the lights change, it will use more to get up to speed again. If its a 60mph road, the 220 could actually be more economical overall.

sounds good well i will have to put a full 60ltrs in to see if i get that in "E" mode on say 15 mile journeys everyday. - what is the first obvious cause for bad MPG?

or is that simple opening a can of worms in terms of troubleshooting?

TIA

LOL yeah ur right, I drive a VW golf GTI turbo which is a 1.8T engine remapped to 205BHP which gives me ave 35MPG on a 15 min run (not thrashing it) but as soon you open your foot the computer reads 23-26MPG!!

so yes i suppose the same for any car, I shall just wait to get all the servicing ect done and change this damn viscous coupling thing so the fan ****** speeds up!

Thanks again

To be honest, as the car supposedly retuned itself every second, not much. A dodgy sensor could in theory put it on the wrong track so check the MAS. Also check the tyre pressures, brake binding etc.

C180 / C220D Fuel consumption

Hi Guys

I used to have a C180 and upgraded to a C220D which I run now.

Firstly, the C180. I almost always got 410 miles from a full tank every time in normal use, that was 30% town and 70% on open roads. That was about 34 - 35 mpg. On a good run at 75 - 80 on the motorway it would rise to 38 - 40 mpg. I always used "S" and not "E".

I now have a C220D. I get 42 - 44 mpg going to work and back. Thats 70 miles a day with 20 miles on A Class roads, 10 miles of road works at 20 - 30mph and the rest on dual carriageway at 70 mph on cruise. It's usually about 520 - 550 miles on a tankful. I always use "S" and not "W" as it reduces it toi a 4 speed box. I always accelerate moderately.

Last weekend, I went from Edinburgh to Burton on Trent, 330 miles, 95% on motorway/dual carriageway at 70mph on cruise. I got 44mpg on the way down. On the way back I did the same route at 80mph on cruise. I've been to work Monday Tuesday and Wednesday and tonight the yellow light came on at 560miles. It always takes 58 litres if I fill up as soon as the light comes on, so that's 12.8 gallons. 560 / 12.8 is 43.75 mpg.

I find that if you do 60-ish you get 40-ish mpg. At 70 you get 42 - 44 mpg and at 80 it is more efficient at 44mpg. At 80, the engine feels smoother and quieter, and the acceleration is superb up to 100mph.

Yes, sure, its an old non turbo slug, but it does me fine. I change the oil and run an injector cleaner through it every so often. It has hauled 4 adults, a bootful and a roof box to Plymouth and back at 80 returning an average of 40mpg. Can anyone do better than that?

Guys,
How on earth can your c180's give you such good mpg, i have had my 96 N reg from 1999 and i have never ever got any where near the milage stated in the above threads... the most i have ever got was just under 300 miles per tank and that was 80% motorway and 20% local....
Usually see around 250-270 per tank when reserve light goes on..... am i missing something or is my car in need of a serious overhaul!!!!
