Parked my seven year old C180 sports coupe Friday night and on Saturday morning started engine, which started belching black smoke , wouldnt idle and sounded terrible. Arranged RAC attend and it wouldnt start at all. Taken to garage , no compression. Have been told that the timing chain has flipped over ( sorry , not sure of terminology , just a driver). Have been quoted £1500 but could be more . Have owned it since new , always serviced. Merc garage has never heard of similar happening
Any comments ? I understand it is worth about four thousand. If it gets fixed for this price is it worth then hanging on to it . I liked the car very much ..up to now

Hi Mate,

If the timing belt has come away, it could do potential damage to the engine depending on how much you've then tried to start it. Even with the timing belt on the vehicle, if it's 1-2 teeth out, it could start but do damage.

I would first go to a garage and have the belt changed, then try start the vehicle and see how it runs.. (petrol?).. do a compression test after replacing the belt and hopefully fingers crossed it's not done any damage... certainly won't cost you £1500 for a timing belt change.

If it has done damage then yes I can see the bill starting to pile on you depending on the parts damaged.

Where are you based?.. I'm sure there's plenty of guys here that would take the job on for you.. If you're in London I know of a good company that will take it on, recover and deliver the vehicle back to you.

To do the job properly the timing chain ,tensioner, and all of the sprockets should be replaced as it's usually a combination of stretched chain and worn sprockets that cause this . The timing chain should be replaced every 180,000 miles as a matter of course and the sprockets examined for wear. Hopefully it hasn't bent anything (valve stems) . Good luck.

Good luck if the garage is not MB specific if they would like the timing chain fitting instruction, I can supply, failure to fit the new one can spell disaster if not followed

Is that across the entire range of MB's... all chains? :D They're doing something right!

Learn something new every day

From around 1988 MB have used dual chains right up to 2005-6 when the went back to a single on one of the engines,. they give problems

Normally it's easier and cheaper to replace an engine than to rebuild it. I can't think that a C180 engine would be expensive at a breakers yard

I'd check the value of the car very carefully before deciding how to proceed

Yes, timing cover is off.
I know where that crank must be on 20degrees and cams have small holes where u can put pin through, but inlet cam has adjuster, that is adjustable. Sprocket is moving a little on camshaft. But where must i turn it?

The WIS did not give anything on the 111 in the 202 re the timing, only the 112 and 113, this threw me a bit.

I will try and find the 111 in a different car
