The Hi Level Brake Light repeater on my 1996 C180 Estate has stopped working. When I removed it today (hoping to solder a new LED to the PCB) I found the unit to be sealed up. Does anyone know if it's possible to get at the LEDs. There were some numbers on the plastic:ZB 202 820 06 56, ZB 234001? Are these MB Part Numbers?

Hello and welcome.

Yes that is the part number for that lighting unit, I would check with a meter or substitute lamp to be sure that the lamp is at fault and that the wiring has not broken.

Inside these lamp there are 3 lots of 3 LEDs wired in series and unusual for them all to go out at the same time

i agree with Malcolm. more likely to be a broken wire where the wiring goes from inside the car to inside the tailgate as it flexes every time you open and close the tailgate! easy way to tell is to check for power and earth at the lamp. if one or both are missing, locate the wires where they exit the car and enter the tailgate, and pull back the rubber "boot" theyre usually hidden in to find the correct wire(s). hold each end of that section of the wire and pull them away from each other reasonably hard. a broken wire usually shows up by the insulation stretching or even snapping!
