My indie took and hour £55 and teh switch was £75. You need to remove airbag etc to get at it.

New W203 Haynes manual covers this task. Section 12.4. Disconnect battery, remove drivers side lower facia panel, remove steering wheel, remove airbag contact unit/clockspring. The rest depends on year of car.

Hi,

I've exactly the same problem now on my w203 '03 Coupe car...

I was trying to replace the switch myself today, but unfortunately I couldn't get the steering wheel off. I've successfully removed the air bag but could unscrew the allan 10 bold. It was too tight...
How to loosen this screw? (direction, method, etc?)

I would appreciate any help.

Hi Dec,

thank you for all your replies.

I'm using 3/8 flexi breaker bar with Allan 10 socket + extension (another 30-40cm) pipe.

I'll try to remove the steering wheel again tomorrow, but I'm not sure how to unscrew that bold. Is this a normal thread? Which way should I be trying... clockwise or counterclockwise to unscrew it?

Thanks for your help.

Counter–clockwise I should think, never taken one off before.
If you look at the seventh picture down in the link you will see the length of his tool, what I’m getting at is that if you extend the length of your ratchet you can increase the force on the nut, a vacuum cleaner metal pipe over the ratchet bar for example would do the job if it is made of fairly strong metal.

Take note of what he says in the article, turn the steering wheel all the way to the left instead of putting pressure on the steering wheel lock.

Example, see… http://202tech.mkosonen.com/howto/steering.html

Quote,
“Step 5: Now that the scary part is out of the way, Take a look at the big bolt that holds the steering wheel on. Removing it will require a big breaker bar, and two people. The bolt is a 10mm Allen driver. I used a 4 inch extension on my ratchet, and use a large torque wrench to take it off. It is necessary to have two people because one person needs to turn the wrench, and the other needs to hold the steering wheel in place. It is NOT recommended to torque on the steering wheel lock as that would likely break it. Have the other person hold the wheel in place.”
