Ok this is the problem, C180 with auto box, in drive the car has a misfire, just occasionally not all the time, if the car is driven in 2nd, 3rd, 4th on the autobox then theres no misfire.

Does the autobox comunicate with the engine ECU in any way??

Can you explain the misfire more? When does it happen, is it when you pull away or accelerate, is it noticeable on idle?

misfire can be on tickover, when I select Drive the misfire can increase, it doesnt misfire all the time, I drove the car for about 2 miles no misfire drove perfectly.
Parked the car for 4 mins, started it again and it misfired badly. Drove a short distance and it stalled at a T junction, restarted and it ran fine again.

hi there have you checked the spark plugs? I bought mine from mercedes Bosch they did around 10,000 miles and during this I got a misfire whilst driving occasionally on local roads and on the motorway long distances. They were burnt out causing misfire. Eventually fitted NGK and never got any misfiring or engine spluttering since.

To reset motronic.

Battery off 10 mins
battery on and ign on 10 sec
Ign off 10 sec
ign on10 sec and start.

Thats the way you set the idle speed, cant say that it will fix your fault

I do make some errors sometimes when the has been a change like on the diesel thread with fuel pump, but that is life just keeping up with the changes.

I am in the middle of doing a list of all known faults and cures, to save typing the same thing out over and over again.

Can anyone clarify this for me, the Haynes book states the timing setup on the C180 as 20 degress ATDC, is this 100% correct.

This is the point where the cams are unloaded for use when working on the valve gear.(2A.12 para22).
The ignition timing is not given in Haynes , it is purely academic as it is set by the engine Ecu and is not adjustable
Just checked Autodata and the same info is given ,20deg ATDC on no.1 cyl.

Yes agreed but if the cams are locked in postion as described in the manual and the bottom pully was set at 10 Degress ATDC and 20, then the timing would be out and the electronics wouldnt compensate for that.

When working on the valvegear before refitting the timing chain the crank must be set at 20deg atdc and the cams locked in position with the pins as described , only then are the sprockets and chain fitted , therefore the timing cannot be set at anything other than 20dec atdc.
There is an allowance for camchain wear but i don't get what you say about 10deg atdc as you would not use this setting because the valves are likely to contact the pistons if you use anything other than the specified setting.
