Hello,

I've noticed my C180 is hitting temperatures in excess of 100C (around the 110C mark) is this normal ?

Thanks in advance,

CSW

Does it vary between sitting in traffic and out on the open road ? My gauge sits at 80C constant but they are not that accurate as to the actual temperature.

we have a switch on our cars which triggers the fan to kick in if the temperature reached 100C. If yours always sit at 100C then get it looked at as it could be faulty switch.

Normal temp should be 80C but it can climb from 90 - 100C when its hot outside and your car is standstill in traffic. When it reaches 100C the fan should kick in to cool it down to 80 - 90.

If you only have the one engine fan then the thermostat opens at around 87C and the visco fan cuts in and speeds up.

Any electric fan on the rad if fitted does not open till 100c.

You should check that the visco is running at full power by seeing if it will slice a carrot at 95C

Malcolm, why don`t you buy one of those Mouli kitchen appliances to slice your carrots ? Lot easier than starting the car up every time. What do you peel your potatoes with, put them in the hub caps ?

I think it tends to creep up more sitting in traffic queques and the like.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions both mechanical and culinary :), I will probably take it to a mechanic though as I'd have no idea where to start.

Is the engine fan the big one sitting behind the radiator ? or another ?

Sorry, I'm hopeless with all things mechanical.

We could be wrong on this and the car only having one rad fan,,,if there was a engine fan it would be mounted on the front of the engine on the water pump nose

I went to my mechanic today and he said that MBs are not really his forte :( which troubles me as in my experience it is difficult to find a trustworthy mechanic and I do trust that one.

He suggested changing the thermostat.

If that doesn't do it I reckon I'm going to have to find a MB specialist, don't suppose anyone can recommend one in Glasgow ?

Well, got a new thermostat and this seems to have not solved the problem but helped a little (doesn't heat up just as quickly) still hitting 100C though, also now the coolant light keeps coming on and off and on etc while driving now, checked the levels and they're fine.

Will this need to be reset ?

And if so do I need to get MB to do it or can an indie do that ?

There is nothing to re set on your car,,running at the 100º c is fine.

On most MBs the water level lamp switch is wired in series with the washer bottle lamp switch

On the open road, the temperature should be around 83c, when you are stuck in traffic, the temperature will rise to around 100c and drop back to 83c when you get moving again.

Get whoever installed the thermostat to check the coolant level again, as there may still be some air locks in the system, the low level will cause the warning light to come on and off, perhaps as you corner.
