C180 Service Re-Set

hi i have a 98 c180 esprit and my service re-set won't re-set.
i went to merc they said my dash lights dont stay on long enough to use the re-set, by this they meen..... when you turn on ign theDash Lights stay on 4 about 2 secs then go out in poz 1 on the key (without starting the engine) WHY?

so they said it has a DASH FAULT and £500 should poss see it fixed!
can ya help? cheers

Service reset

Try This: With key in on (not start) position press trip meter reset button twice quickly, the miles to go will appear. Hold down the same button and switch the ignition off then on again KEEP holding the button for about 10 seconds, this should clear the display.
