I bought a 52 plate C180K recently, first mercedes and i LOVE IT ! :D

HOWEVERRR...being a female and being blonde im going to admit that i dont know how to lock my car..! Until i went to my dad with it and he realised i wasnt just having a blonde moment.

What is meant to happen is
- i press the unlock button once - the drivers door unlocks
- press it twice and the whole car unlocks.
- Then you press the lock button once and it locks the whole car
- well thats how i thought it was supposed to work?

BUT i press my buttons and the car just goes awol! For example i'll press the lock button once - yet only one door locks, and sometimes it doesnt matter if i press it ten times i cant get both doors to lock at the same time - the unlock buttons the same. I cant understand it at all but if anyone could help that would be fantastic.

Many thanks

Hi and welcome Jac,

What happends if you point the key at the back of the handle on the drivers door and press one button?

There is a infra red receiver in there

hey, thanks for the speedy reply.

Its just the same, doesnt matter where i am with the key, or how far away or close i am to the car it still seems to do what it likes in the central locking dept.

its as if the lock "sticks" on the door are out of sync if you know what i mean? sometimes they lock together and the sticks are both down, yet sometimes one is locked and one isnt? Yet even if the door isnt locked and i can open it the alarm goes off??
Its honestly driving me mad ! :(

Is there any problem when you lock the car from inside, and do all of the buttons go down, and stay down

Its properly one of the micro switches in on of the locks that has packed up. When you drive off or when you lock/unlock the car, does one of the door pind bounce and make a noise like a machine gun! That is a common sign that that lock has failed and needs to be replaced.

Other than that without having a look you will need to get it diagnosed on a diagnostic machine.

Where abouts are you, we may be able to recommend someone near by?

Sorry that I am unable to give you a definative answer.

Hey,
Im in Ayr, Ayrshire in Scotland?
Yeah when i try to lock it or drive off the pins in the door go wild!
But that sounds very close to the problem.
Diagnostic machine? Would only a mercedes garage have one of those?
Your a great help thanks :)

Sounds like the door mech has packed up. Do a search for 'Bouncing Button' on the forum.

I'm sure someone on here will suggest a good garage near you.

Yes a common problem, a spring breaks in the motor lock that causes the buttons to bounce.

Another fault is where the locking rods pass through the inner door skin, through rubber grommets and these can stick, lubricating them with a silicon oil stops this

The fault lies with the door which is bouncing, if both bounce then they will both need to be replaced. The locks are about £65 if i remember correctly and take about 1 and a half hours each to fit.

thanks very much ! I took it into the local merc garage and yup i need not one but TWO door locks - the parts only cost £55 HOWEVER its £105 AN HOUR labour rate and it takes FIVE HOURS apparently !!
i took out a warranty when i got the car last month thankfully, but the warranty covers a labour rate of £45 an hour - which i think is shocking, no garage in the world would do that sort of labour rate!!! Luckily, the guy in the garage is working something out and im getting it fixed and wont need to pay extra :)
Thanks for all your help
