Hi wonder if anyone can help,
Have just replaced an old ailing alternater with a nice new one, but the new one doesn't seem to be charging and the car just ground to a halt after a while, have put a new battery on but, the warning lights on dash dont come on and stay on before you start the engine, do i need to do any resets?
Thanks Carl
Bythe way it's a 1996 c200 elegance, have checked all fuses including the one in the ovp?

Was the alternator a genuine mercedes part.
Even if it wasnt i would still take it back to where you brought it from as it must be faulty.
Was theold one charging before you replaced it. What was the reason for changing it in the first place

If the battery was not charging, the the warning lamp should be lit, though it could be lit very dimly depending on the fault with the alternator

these symptoms point to a wiring problem between the cluster and alternator, or an alternator fault. the fact that the lights do not come on before start up shows that the charge warning wire is open circuit at the cluster.

If the bulb has gone,, I do not think that the charging wire can get excited

Ok thanks everyone for your input, I have a sneaking feeling the small wire which connects to the alternator (does this one link to the warning light?) felt as if the wire inside may be broken, but didn't want to pull it to hard or start cutting away at it...but if this would correspond to the cause of said probs ill definatly have a little exploritory look tomorrow. :)

Yes the exciter wire is very thin and that could be where your fault is

When the wire is fixed yo will know instantly as the lamp will come on before you start the car
