c200 key/starting problem

hi, i have just got a c200 kompressor 2001 x reg. key will not turn in morning, after lots of attempts and funny things happening it does start and is then ok untill left for an hour or so. funny things include, washers operating, headlights come on, central locking works sometimes. have checked battery voltage in both keys. have been told might be a module under steering wheel ? any help very welcome, thanks

Sounds to me like you may have a faulty EIS, electronic igntion switch, the unit the key goes in. This is the primary Can commuicator, distributor for the car, it holds most of the vehicles coding settings and are comman for failling.

Do the funny things happen before the car eventaly starts or does this happen with the key not turned?

the funny things do happen before car starts and are all ok once it starts.
but also happen with the key not turned, and also have happened after i remove the key ! i do have the no. of someone with a laptop. do u think it would be able to pinpoint the trouble ? thanks

This EIS sytem can only be accessed on a MB compliant diagnostic set up like Star or X431 or Carsoft

Have you tried pressing the footbrake and wrigling the gear shift when turning the key

Is you key the flat metal blade or the plastic one

hi malcom, have tried footbrake and gearshift when trying to start, and a few other things! and key is plastic with 3 buttons and sensor in the end.

Sorry to say this does look like a switch problem, I will look it up again, but I have seen this many times.

update-- car would not start this morning. fitted second hand ign barrel.
using old original key. car now seems dead apart from stereo etc.
any ideas? thanks
