I have been experiencing lumpy running, followed by running on what seems like thre cylinders when sitting at traffic lights. If I turn the ignition off and wait for the lights to change before restarting all is OK after the restart untill the next set of lights! This does not happen all the time, car runs OK on open road. The car is just over three years old and has done 36,000 miles. I have just taken to the dealer who has told me it is a head problem and rather reluctantly said that this is a known fault and that on cars with a similar problem MB recommend a full change of exhaust valves is the cure, which in the dealers experience usually is only a temp fix, a full new head being the only cure. I am devastated this my first Mercedes, took me thirty years to get it, and just out of warranty and I am faced with a momumental bill.

Does anyone know about this problem or am I being fed a line?

How far out of warranty are you?
Your dealer does not exactly sound helpful. Depending upon a few things, you may get some goodwill form MB.

If not then find a good independant MB specialist. I'm sure a few members will give you some recommendations if you come back with where you are.

C200 head

The dealer has been asked to take up with MB and is going to do so, as the car is only six months out of warranty. I am in the Leeds area and would certainly be interested in my options so to speak should things not work out. Such a shame because my MB experience for the past three years has been out of this world, who knows MB may redeem themselves yet.

C200 Head

My thanks to Blobcat.

The link contains very interesting information. I am calling at the dealers in the morning to pick up the car armed with some very interesting facts which I am sure will help my case. Many thanks for the info and I will keep you posted on the outcome.
