C200 Vibration/Steering wheel shake

Hi

I was getting a quite bad steering wheel shake at speeds above 60mph. I have just had all of the wheels balanced and while this has improved things massively, there is still a slight shake between 65mph and 75mph, after which you can drive through it.

Do you think there may be something else I should check or maybe that they haven't quite got the wheel balance right.

Car is a C200 auto with standard steel wheels.

Many thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul, If all 4 wheels were balanced then try changing the back wheeks to the front and see if there is any difference. If there is then it probably is a wheel balance issue. Watch the tyre pressures are correct though.

Some posibilities:-

You may have a buckled wheel rim, these will ballance but will still shake the car. Lift it up and spin the wheels look for side ways wobble, if this is the cause it needs only to be a small deviation from true.

Or one or more duff shock absorbers. Get sombody to watch your wheels at the speed of interest (on a quiet motorway or the like), if these are at fault one wheel will bounce noticably when the fault manifests itself.

Or even a worn ball joint, arm bush or anti roll bar bushes and links in either front or rear suspension.

Thanks for the advice, I will first try swapping the wheels around at the weekend and see what happens. If problem still exists i will look into wiremans advice.

Thanks again, Paul

Sorry, worn bushes will not cause this,,its is balancing, sure if ball joints are worn it will make it worse but cannot start it in the first place on a good road,, the fact that you can drive through it proves the point
